Wonder why Wutan's Bagua bears so little resemblance to Yin style when it supposedly came straight from Gong Baotien.

Different yin lineages look very, very different from each other as well.

Some say that Dong Haichuan taught orally (i.e. by mostly just talking) - could be why baguazhang lineages look wildly different, especially in the 2nd, and sometimes 3rd, generations!

Later generations apparently started teaching/learning in a different way, though - it is now a lot easier to tell who learned from whom just by looking.

Met Adam a long while back, teacher Brendan Lai, used to teach his 7-stars in the same area of Golden gate park.
Wow he got old, as I suppose we all do.

He tried to do some good things while in the US for CMA.
Interesting clips.

The way I heard it, LYQ was already an accomplished martial artists with a couple of styles under his belt when he hooked up with GBT, and so he wanted some very specific things out of GBT and GBT didn't feel the need to have LYQ go through a lot of the beginning syllabus. Also GBT taught a couple of different ways, with one of them having more of an emphasis on the Qing Gong part of the system. If you look at the Wu Tang guys next to HeJinHan or his students next to Wang Zhuang Fei's descendants it would be hard to tell they all come from the same source.

FWIW.

Hey, Bob!

Do you know if that secret file of Bagua thing is part of a bigger tape or is it just that snippet...and if it's a tape would it be in English. Some of the above is subtitled but not all of it, and I'm one of those non-Chinese Speakers, still as yet.

Just curious.

Best,

S.

Often times if you put people from the SAME lineage next to each other it is hard to tell they had the same teacher; since we each make the art our own according to our body type and how we can move.
So yeah, not surprising that different branches look completely different.

Shawn:

I think this is part of a 3 disc set - I haven't bought it but it is supposed to have English subtitles all through it.

Bob

Generally I post clips to generate insight - I may not even agree 100% with Adam Hsu, in fact, I may disagree with him 100%. I seldom post my assessments because what I think really doesn't matter as I leave it to the viewer to decide what, if anything, is of value. There are things in the past I would have considered worthless but from my "aged" perspective I can see the value.

Sometimes the response to posts are really not about discussion at all but simply the old fist-in-a-velvet-glove and one ups-man-ship. After posting and reading for so many years, why re-invent the wheel.

Chud is 100% on target in my thinking.
