What was going on with the Tai Chi "master"'s weird guard? Had he been taking lessons in the SPEAR(tm) system?

This is quite possibly a watershed moment for CMA.

Stuff like this is part of the problem, IMHO

marvin8 wrote:I thought the following demonstration was good. It showed setting up, waiting for the opportunities, had some movement and a couple variations. A better way to practice the movement may be in light sparring, as in the previous video I posted.

Yes, I was not going to use the word good, however I was trying to keep my post short.

A more accurate statement would be I like this demonstration better than the usual demonstration where the opponent leaves his hand out frozen in the air, while the demonstrator catches and breaks the arm, without any discussion on timing, setups or variations.

Can you comment on what "problem(s)" you see in the demonstration?

A lot of things, but to sum it up very briefly, it's stilted

It is very odd but judging by the attention it has got I think it qualifies as the fight of the century. They are even trying to recreate the legendary battle:

The fact that this completely run of the mill incident has become "legendary" says something

A little different idea than the clips shown.

At 8:18, "On the other hand in Cheng Hsin, we rarely do that, most of the time we lead or get out of the way."

Many combat sports "lead or get out of the way."

IMO, this concept is similar to what fighters do in MMA and boxing, attack by drawing. Many times, this is done without contact. One example is lean forward with your guard up (deception of distance, showing defense mode), opponent is enticed to throw a punch, you roll with the punch and finish. There are many ways to attack by drawing.

To kind of tie in to the thread, can tai chi strategies work in a real fight? IMO yes, some of the tai chi strategies are already being used in combat sports, at the higher levels. However, some people will say that's not Tai Chi concepts. It may not be Tai Chi, but it may be similar in concepts. So, why can't many tai chi players use these concepts in a real fight? IMO, it may be due to the way they train.

Based on what I've seen on video of Ralston, and what I've heard from people I respect, he probably is better at taiji than 99% of these so called "masters."

yeah, ppl with small minds use very little, make it a lot and
call themselves/allow others to call them master this and that
but mostly they are just masterbators
when practitioners touch hands, they will know you have "it" or not have "it"

to sum it up, :
this is the way how it looks, when practicing the Forms only/mostly, and trying to poof that you`re able to fight.
No free sparing/competition experience = lack of ability to use any move trained thousands of years in the forms.

There's a joke here somewhere about "art" and "shit" but I can't quite put my finger on it... Nor in it...
