Functional TCMA for Today's World

Postby Pavel Macek on Fri Jun 09, 2017 12:10 am

I just found an old video in my archive from one of our training camps and have uploaded it on Youtube.

This is how we rolled 7 years ago: Basic drills, strength & conditioning, application drills, hitting stuff, hitting people, sparring, full contact fighting.

Our motto for years has been and still is Functional TCMA for Today's World.

Enjoy!

Thank you I-mon.

More lost & found footage: This one is from 2011 Practical Hung Kyun Camp. You can see many of the typical Hung Ga Kyun techniques in the video, in free full-contact sparring.

Hi Pavel,

How do the Lam family feel about your approach? Have you encountered any negativity? (Practical Hung Kyun suggests that maybe some Hung Kyun isn't practical).

phil b: yes, we encoutered some negativity, from all over the TCMA world, because yes, some Hung Kyun isn't practical. But our results speak for themself - and it is hard to argue with results. We have first MMA victory, and starting this July, I will train a group of fighters called "10 Tigers" to take the MMA league by the storm. By the way, we are coming back to the roots - Lam Jou's school had punching bags, tatami (!), they used gloves.

Lam Sai Wing's HK was different from Wong Fei Hung's. Lam Jou's Hung Kyun was different from Lam Sai Wing's. My Sifu's HK is different from his father. PHK is the next evolution and the future of our art - hence Functional TCMA for Today's World.

Pavel,

My experience of Hung Gar comes from different line and I always found it practical. I guess it comes down to how the art is passed on. I'm old school, but if you are getting results and preserving the art, good for you.

I should point out that during my time learning Hung Gar, we used pads and a heavy bag as well as traditional tools. There's nothing like throwing a gwa chui and the pad holder withdraws. If the stance is off, you can end up on your ass.

middleway: Crosstrainig. I have many friends in the combat sports circles, learned a lot of from them, and I will also ask them for their help and advice. Btw. these vids are 6-7 years old - we do much better today (I hope).

I like the way you guys train
Would love to see what exercises you do with the lama blocks
I have taught them to some of my tai chi students to get a little more umph in their punches
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form
