had friend in Singapore, all they dealt with was high end audio...if some have not heard it,
its truly amazing....big bucks,
but, wow the sound 8-)

When digital first came out, many felt it was not comparable to vinyl
Back in the day, we would buy albums, play and record them once on reel to reels 4 tracks,
at that time....or high end cassette decks.

Wish I would have kept the albums :P

Man you guys were much better audio and technophiles than I ever was or could be (not great musical appreciation, not great engineering appreciation).

Also, I kinda shudder to think how much money everyone spent on badass equipment (as Steve said, that competitive male thing; I get this more with car tech, but I don't have the funds for modding anyway; my hobbies are all cheap: hug qi, play some soccer/football).

It really amazes me the niche businesses that are now viable due to the power of the internet brining together things that previously required paper catalogs and long lead times.

This one company alone has close to 7k options. http://www.vacuumtubes.net

Again...amazing.

:) A Nakamichi 1000 could run you well over $2K today.

Thanks for the link to vacuumtubes.net. Knowing that I can get replacements makes me want to start my project. Oh oh.

ah, Nakamichi its brings memory of my old Sansui P,A, :)
speakin` about tubes and amplification:
Don`t think, that you have go for all tube staff.
To get warm tube sound in my system I use ART tube preamp, you may connect it virtually to any sound source and solid amps.
I use KRK studio monitor speakers bi- amped/hi and lo independent/ + aramid membrane active subwoofer.
Worth to mention, that high end hardware is as important, as acoustic isolation of the room.
I get incredible boost in sound quality, by adding bass traps and some foam tiles to my "sounds room" .
so,
in my opinion most important piece of hardware in the studio is preamp. /mixer/.
and cables..., we almost forget about it!
Speakers are equally important, but PA need to be just >clean< , high end solid state amp.,will do the job, then .
I added also DBX compressor - between CD ,or any digital sources,- for better sounds selection.
CD`s has 98db dynamic, it is to high for our ears .
You may add also BBE sound enhancer for extra wow, . 8-)

I did /have chance /to do comparison between :
Led Zeppelin - we all know them ,CDs and vinyls / original editions , not digital remasters/.
1st -US LP`s are different in sound from European editions , I prefer US printing!
2nd - to make it short - I don`t listening any more CDs of my favorite band from `70. /or doi`n it very rarely/
Particularly the 3rd!, my favorite one
maybe `cause there is lot of acoustic guitars,?

It seems like it should be theoretically possible to digitally recreate or mimic the warm sound?

yes, it is
theoretically...:)
There is lot of software emulation of tube amps on the market ,
but it is not the real thing, impressions vary, dough.
I have couple tube amps., simulation in my bass multi effect box, however I ended with real tube preamp.
From my experience:
you HAVE to get one real tube device in your chain if you lookin` for warmer /more >natural</ tones in the listening room.

Heras a tip put wood glue all over the face of your LP,S let it dry and pull it off
Good as new every bit of crap removed
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

The difference is huge and it doesn't take much money to hear it. The first system where I enjoyed the difference was just a $3000 system with a set of Linn Can speakers and Linn turntable, plus a basic amp and preamp at an audio shop. It was nothing fancy and the system I was using at the time to play CDs was $5000; I really never wanted to go back to it.

yup, Michael
I exchanged $3000 for :
Celestion speakers /$1000/
Thorens turntable /$500/
Azden MC cartridge /$300/
Sansui pre.A., and PA /$1000/- solid state amp., however .
Monster cables -$200 summed up the bill, but it was 1985 in NYC and I had a chance to pay less then regular shoping price...

I even didn`t think about Mark Levinsons 100watts mono tube !, so you need twoPA /one was $5000 back days/, and you have almost double the price - `cause you need pre amp ...,
or >cheap< McIntosh option - just $2000, but stereo :),
It is mild-shelf ,dough
I recall Hi-end audio shop on Canal str .
Their cheapest set started at $20 000.

Lemme tell you that the room is very important and you don't need $20K for good sound, but if Zeus blessed me with some Mark Levinsons I would convert.
