Zhan Zhuang for Cancer survivors

With reference to the article “Martial Arts for Cancer Survivors”, Fight Times, September 10, 2010:

https://magazine.fighttimes.com/martial ... survivors/

I made the following proposal to the Coping with Cancer in Leicestershire and Rutland:

Zhan Zhuang or known as standing meditation is a non-trance meditation to aid the development of embedded strength to improve muscle elasticity. Each session will include the following: seated or standing warmup exercise of joints (10 minutes); Hunyuan Zhuang or other meditative postures to suit each client with stretching to eight sides, five elements of breathing, postural control techniques, self-generated flow, and harmonize with the external environment (20 minutes); testing and passive motion practice and theories (20 minutes); seated or standing circumduction exercise of the joints (10 minutes).

Any advice will be very much appreciated, as it will be a group session and will be difficult to suit different people with different conditions.

Excellent!

Your approach/methods need more background referencing western science while still maintaning the wording you presently have. I periodically teach and have presented proposals within the cancer wellness context but there the more recognizeable interventions are still yoga, reiki and in some instance tai chi chih so the niche area is difficult to break into as part of another value/viewpoint that is feasible and grounded in 'western science'. My approach has been the stress management paradigm and the chemical benefits associated with decreaseing threshold response as shown by decreased heart rate, better coping skills and the research by Hans Selye.

The MBSR of Jon Kabat-Zinn can serve as a point of reference in placement of zhanzhuang as part of intervention i.e. adjunct therapy, not to cure cancer (an impossibility that doing zhanzhuang can prevent cancer) but a mediation tool in initiation of a relaxation response (RR) that has the potential to reverse deleterious conditions and assist with chronic conditions

Excellent source material

zhanzhuang has the mindfullness phase. an awareness and elements of progressive muscle relaxation within its function of quiet standing!

People with Cancer need to be moving. That is why in china most do Goulin qigong, a walking style of qigong for Cancer. just my 2 cents.

People are under the impression that Guilin qigong is only the walking portion but there are many 'routines' based on the severity of the disease.
Additionally, the overstimation of her therapy is grossly exaggerated since Mme Guolin had numerous surgeries plus the corresponding drug regimen which failed to cure her disease so there are mitigating and extenuating 'therapies' which were/are not/never were reported and that confuses the issue of qigong as intervention for cancer. People have benefitted from qigong as intervention/adjunct therapy as opposed to solo therapy without drugs or surgery

I re-read the initial link but one thing that mesmerized me was that Goulin was stated to not be a master of qigong, which is a problematic statement (per the link)

1, Guolin was knowledgeble in her 'family' system but the 'expert' status would only be in her didactic manner of 'proving' that it was equal to others in significance and benefit i.e. through some type of measureble instrument aka clinical trial
2, Otherwise it would be in the realm of fitness, rehabilitation or exercise regimen
3. Guolin did add elements of other qigong methods that she thought would work to make her system better

I am bemused by the qigong expert moniker but I understand the marketing that goes on/is going on to give the appearance that a qigong system is better just because it is spoken about more often or advertised more so the commodity status is a double edged sword ???

Yu Yong Nian was intensely interested in the health benefits of zhan zhuang. He passed away at 93. His student Lam Kam Chuen may be of some use to you.
I define internal martial art as unusual muscle recruitment and leave it at that. If my definition is incomplete, at least it is correct so far as it goes.

People here have no idea of the relevancy of Zhan Zhuang with cancer survivors but they do looked at it as a kind of Qigong. And their idea of Qigong is just light exercise and some Yoga groups and Tai Chi groups are doing the same. The relevant features of Zhan Zhuang are passive and active stretching that can build up the practitioners' strengths, and it is a question of knowing how.

I think Lam lives in London. If you do not know about him already, go take a look.

Some people use the word commercialism as if it is a bad word, but if carefully examined that word is the source of any and all prosperity.

I am from Hong Kong, and Yu Yongnian is not known by the HK Yiquan community. May be he was a later student of Wang Xiangzhai since 1944. He was known to treat various chronic diseases but whether that included cancer survivors is not known. The cancer supporting group here is looking for things have immediate effects.

I very much disagree with the idea of "non-concentric" strength.

Non-concentric means without the use of concentric muscle contraction, and it is “use no brute force” in Chinese literature.
