In shadowboxing, limb speed is often used as a way to manifest strength without a target. The issue in using strength to move your limbs quickly without a target is that you are using your strength in a way which can not fully approximate the way strength is used against something solid. That being said, moving your core body quickly and in diverse ways is very beneficial in that it trains your body to have the necessary co-ordination and balance which is the foundation of effective techniques. Of course when there is no opponent you can do whatever you like and justify it by some reasoning.

I once saw a short film footage from Cuba of an thin elderly man doing shadow boxing, no excessive arm movement but more whole body moves, very beautiful done
