Great interview with Tim Cartmell

Postby nicklinjm on Mon Jan 01, 2018 7:37 pm

Just saw this recent interview with Tim Cartmell, tonnes of great pithy comments in there based on his 30+ years of MA practice:

Because Tim trained extensively in traditional CMA before coming to MMA / BJJ I think his comments on traditional martial arts are pretty fair:

- Importance of at least 'ground proofing' for TCMA people if they are concerned with self defence
- Value of traditional MA in teaching alignment and correct power generation
- Importance of sparring and drills for learning to fight
- Primacy of single technique training over forms - forms are just encyclopedias of techniques
- "If you want to punch a man in the face, you cannot beat Western boxing" ;D

Also was tickled that he said at least 3 of his students have knocked people out with Piquan in street fights!

He always gives such an easy-to-understand down-to-earth explanation of everything MA.

Nice interview. What is this site? Hope it can keep this level up!

As usual there are quite a few generalisations and things that I really don't agree with. Interesting nevertheless.

Only minor "issue" which is mostly theoretical I have is he doesn't want to get into qigong or "mysterious energy". I don't think he ever looked into this stuff in the name of practicality. That's ok even though my interest obviously spans into that area. Everything he does want to cover, I agree with and can't really argue. Got to "touch hands" standing and on ground and got controlled effortlessly. Everything he talks about is stuff he can do and teach. However, although that was sublime, and better than the sublime stuff I've encountered at judo and bjj from non "internal" grapplers, doesn't get anywhere close to the "mysterious" IMA stuff in terms of the very odd feeling of being controlled (to his point, this hasn't been shown in the "open source" mma world and is certainly, certainly not anything high % that I'd want to try to get everyone walking into the mma gym doing even though to me "mysterious" is the best thing in life).

I don't know how to express my thoughts in a few words about some of the generalisations and ideas that I don't agree with... :-\

...So I wrote a blog post instead.... :P
