Rap

Watched part of the Alabama Georgia game and was struck by the truly appalling rap performance. I have no problem with rap per se, I think the originals, Run DMC , Grandmaster Flash etc were brilliant, love Gangstagrass's "Long Hard Times to Come" and can even take small doses of Eminem, but this was unintelligible, had no rhythm and completely out of context

Didn't watch, but I don't like "mumble rap", but it's popular among the young. I can't listen to some of the stuff my grandson likes. Otoh, that may be part of the point. Then again, he listens to the classic hip hop and western classical too. Different strokes.

"Rap" is just one element of "Hip Hop", but there are many styles of rap. Hip Hop doesn't exist the same way it did in the 80s. The various elements have gone their own ways, and aren't linked into a coherent culture. Great graffiti artists are in museums and galleries. Deejays can be famous on their own, and they don't come from "da hood" anymore (like Daft Punk). The champion break dancers are Asians.

If you're talking about Kendrick Lamar at the Alabama game, he's widely agreed to be the greatest living rapper by people who know what they're talking about.

Give this one a chance...

Um, I like Kendrick Lamar. I'm not a fan of mumble rap --which is ... well

You can kind of think of Mumble Rap as new language you don't speak or understand
that is also used as a vocal instrument you can't stand to listen to.
Sort of a melodic slang.

A lot of Rappers bend word sounds.
It really helps in Rap rhyme.
Mumble Rap takes bending to the extreme.
It really helps Rappers to flow & fully "ride the beat."

And, Kendrick Lamar is sort of a conscious Rapper.
He's in the same Rap arena as J. Cole & Oscar winner Common.
But really, he uses a little bit of all Rap styles to communicate in his songs.

Words alone cannot describe my dislike of rap. It's anti-civilisation, devolving human culture..

That's gotta be the most ignorant thing I've seen in a hot minute. Well done, sir.

Aw, people said the same thing about Elvis. Fwiw, some of Beethoven's contemporaries called.his music vulgar. Alas, de gustibus non est disputandum. I.e., different strokes for different folks.
