Yep, we can start by caring for each other as if we were the other.

The question was "if" it was true. But, I'm not sure it was a hoax. There are reports as late as a few hours ago, though the alleged leader of the nationalist group says he was misunderstood. However, it's interesting that the leader of a group speaks out to deny association with someone.

Edit [Is this a fake website? https://republicofflorida.wordpress.com/]

Otoh, it's also interesting that it seems that the goal now is to dissociate the shooter from his political views --because it impugns those who hold similar views. For ex., when photos of Cruz with a MAGA hat appeared, the account was deleted --and it was claimed that the photos were made up to blame Trump. So, I checked. It's a long article, but my point is that everyone seems to want Cruz to represent or not represent their views. Sounds like what Muslims do when a Muslim blows up people in a mosque. Or when a Muslim runs over people and then claims that he was working for ISIS. Everybody accepts that.

Afa Trump, unfortunately, he's a unique position to actually do something about the gun proliferation problem. Ronald Reagan did, and he actually did some shooting.

This video is about how people need to gratify their confirmation bias whenever there's a shooting. Maybe it's one way to make sense of these tragedies.

Feb. 28, 2017, President Trump signs HJ Resolution 40, a bill that made it easier for people with mental illness to obtain guns. CBS News then asked the White House to release the photograph of Mr. Trump signing the bill, making the request a total of 12 times.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders finally responded to repeated emails and phone calls with a one-line note on April 19, 2017, writing to CBS News, "We don't plan to release the picture at this time."

Ironically:

In his speech in response to the school shooting in Florida, President Donald Trump said the administration wants to "tackle the difficult issue of mental health."

Despite this, Trump's recently released budget included a huge cut to the Medicaid program that provides nearly a quarter of all behavioral care funding in the US.

What was "fake news" was the report that there were 18 school shootings. The fake part was how the figure was presented. There may have been 18 firearm discharges on school properties, but some were accidental, few resulted in injury or death. There weren't 18 mass shootings.

Blame is often the motive people present facts/stats in a certain way; and avoiding blame or responsibility is often the other reason. But, in the US, that goes back to colonists and Indians. After the rhetoric, the victims are the ones who are being killed or dying; and not the ones doing the killing. However, there's little relation between stats and the degree of response. That is, unless one of those killed is your kin. The father whose daughter has just been murdered doesn't care who the killer voted for.

The only problem with his analysis is that he doesn't specify an "American" white guy. It's not really a question of race; it's a matter of who can be legally prohibited from owning a weapon of the type used in these shootings in America. Ever notice that the weapons used are obtained legally? There is no way to stop the guy who shot up the LV concert --or anyone like him- from getting any gun he wants legally. Otoh, there are stores with signs saying that they won't sell guns to Muslims. Remember this guy? https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/201 ... /30458663/

Now, can you imagine ... Though, I'm sure that he might deny some white males. But, he'd do it on his own. There's not going to be a law, and nobody's going to be hanging any signs.

I grew up listening to Dale Hansen's sports commentary on the local ABC channel in Dallas and his style was popular. It's surface level, and he usually did it off the cuff, like his mistake repeating the false info. on 18 school shootings this year. His references to white kids and white guys don't seem relevant to me, more like fashionable self-loathing. I don't think he's really saying much here, it was just an emotional rant; very understandable considering the circumstances.

Well, I bet that at least as many white women take prescription medications as white men, but how many white women have committed mass murders at schools. Why is that?

But, imo, the point he was making is that the reason why we say "nothing can be done" is specifically because of who commits these crimes. If they were committed by Muslims, or in the "inner cities", you bet there'd be suggestions and now would be the time to talk about them. He's not saying that race makes murderers.

It's not surprising that the FBI didn't follow up on this Florida killer. It's not surprising that it's against the law for the government to study these shootings. It's not surprising that we won't call this terrorism. That's why all we have to do is wait for the next.

If it happened in the inner cities it wouldn't be news. Plus they all have metal detectors and armed security due to gang violence in the 80s. They tend to handle things out of school
