New Chinese Dictator, any thoughts?

Postby Bill on Tue Feb 27, 2018 11:12 am

China is ushering in another life-long dictator, for the first time since the death of communist China’s founder, Chairman Mao. China’s current constitution states that the president and vice-president “shall serve no more than two consecutive terms.” But China’s Communist Party has announced a proposal to scrap the constitutional term limits of the president and vice-president, which in turn paves the way for China’s current president Xi Jinping to stay on indefinitely.

Is he the next Mao?

Michael may know for sure, but I think all that's happened is that the two-term limitation has been lifted. The US didn't have a term limitation until after WW2.

I also remember Rudy Giuliani saying that the term limits for NYC mayor should be changed --so that he could continue being mayor after 9/11 --which happened right before an election.

I will not be surprised if someone suggests that the US should get rid of the presidential term limit. Let's see :)

Maybe he's the next Bao. But . . . there can only be One. ;D

Ha ha! ;D

My Chinese language teacher gave me that Chinese name after a famous and very righteous Judge, Judge Bao, who fought corruption. After the last few years with the reign of Xi Jinping, that name could suit him good. Both of the two former presidents are under investigation. This is actually the first time since the end of the 80s that I have had hope for the country. Xi Jinping's goal is to completely erase poverty by the year of 2020. Well see if he can hold that promise, but in any case many things are changing for the better. But of course, the country still has a lot of problems and probably will have a lot of problems for many years into the future.

Of course you do.

There's still a chance you can always move
to North Korea.

I wonder how the right would have reacted if Obama were paying off porn stars to keep quiet.

Trump congratulated Xi first thing in the morning.

Extending one's time in the top office is the current vogue globally!

- Russia: Putin was able to be president for a 3rd term by "resetting" his count by letting Medvedev be president for a term in between.
- Turkey: Erdogan will be able to be president for a 3rd term by "resetting" his count by changing the presidency definitions.
- Japan: Abe was able to be prime minister for a 3rd consecutive term by rubber stamping a change in party rules (with almost no fanfare). (He was also prime minister previously, and also "reset" his count by disappearing for a while.)
- China: Xi is only the next in line to think of the same thing - that he is the only one who can do it, etc.

In a way, Japan (as a kind of "natural socialist country") most skillfully managed the change, with hardly a whisper in the news, and almost no voices from the people.

Which might be better viewed in the context of a reaction to whats happening globally.

As some here have already voiced wanting a dictatorship, maybe to be fair
not understanding how the US is set up as a federal republic.

A federation of states with a republican form of government.
