Just to clarify:
I hate bloodshed, and I hate cage chicken like fighting.

Chicken fighting, dog fighting etc are all disgusting passtimes.

But i wouldnt compare these guys to chickens or dogs. They know what they are getting into and they look like they are smiling happy people. A good advert for hard work.

What I find interesting is the striking similarities between this art and Muay Thai.

They are essentially the same art - developed by the same people.. Thailand has just developed and been more open, therefore visible than Burma.

to my limited understanding, burma and siam have a long history of
war and conflict, from 1500 - end 1700 AD.
in the first conflict, the burmese were the aggressor-invader
to fight against the burmese, siam allied themselves with the chinese

the siamese king then was Zheng Xin
Zheng is of mixed blood; his father is from Chao zhou
if you go to thailand now and talk to a thai chinese about "Tay Wang"
they will surely know
(Tay is chaozhou dialect for Zheng and wang means king)

re: vid
their humble surrounding is a stark contrast to their grand and
encompassing view of their opponent. i think this is real understanding
of yin-yang concept in practice.

thank you for posting, Andy, cheers.

Is it? Really?

Is that like taking offense at someone saying "TKD and Karate are basically the same art.."

Yes I am aware of the political/military history between the two countries.

Well, let us be respectful to each style and understand their uniqueness.
So that no silly or even offensive comments are made.
Lethwei is unique.
That is inclusion of head butt. There is more usage of palm.
The centre is lower.
And match is by draw or win by KO/opponent surrendered. No score system.

Like Muaythai, different Lethwei gym has different style or strategies of fighting.
Saying Lethwei same as Muaythai is just as insulting as saying kick boxing is Muaythai, or TDK is karate.

Grapevine talk and somewhat of a reality:
While is SE Asia, I came upon some articles that stated that muay thai is actually a Burmese art that when Thai colonialists occupied part of Burma, they 'misappropriate Burmese MA and somewhere along the line, muay thai became dominant due to cultural hegemony and literate Thailand vs the not so literate Burmese 'peasants'. These are relative terms so please don;t take them as absolute history.

Letwei is a bad mofo MA!

How is what I said disrespectful? The distinctions you cite are simply modern expressions of the art in present day competition, and have no bearing on the original source. IOW - 'Muay thai' initially included head butts.. no score system etc. See subsequent posts by those not itching to cry victim.
