Thanks for all the posts! I'll write these all down, thanks for the good advice.

Yes I'm learning at Lee's Kung Fu and Tai Chi, which I believe was Johnny Lee's first school in the states. He is in Dallas now at his White Leopard school.

At the risk of sounding mundane...

Every individual that "masters" or reaches a high level in any type of skill practices a lot. A whole lot.

Every professional Thai boxer, MMA fighter or concert pianist or Olympic level gymnast for that matter will spend all day practicing and training. You can get in okay shape or probably learn some decent self defense skills in a few hours of practice a week, but to reach a high level of fitness or skill, you'll need to train 6 or so hours a day, 6 days a week.

Thanks Parry,

The truth is often entertaining the first time one hears it.

Good luck with the forms and such.

You are hilarious because you think 6 hours a day, 6 days a week is required for mastery. While I will agree a lot of time is needed 6 hours a day 6 days a week is hilarious.

Parry,

You're probably right. You should inform all those pro athletes and performers that are wasting so much time training.

Perry:

If everybody in your class treats you like a wanker and you are interested in learning fighting, you might want to ask one or two of them for a friendly spar. Probably not the 83-year-old, though.

And as Ian noted, while dodderers can learn certain things from CMA in terms of improving their quality of life, for an 83 year old to be able to ruck is - well, a very exceptional 83 year old.

Actually, the more you train, the better you will be (in general). Obviously, most of us have jobs/school/etc. and thus cannot spend 6 hours a day training, but if you can - more power to you (in more than one way). Just make sure that you are training correctly. (Also, in CMA, it is ideally 7 days a week, not 6 ;) )
