"Chiao Chang-Hung" / Chinese name (characters)

Discussion on the three big Chinese internals, Yiquan, Bajiquan, Piguazhang and other similar styles.

It sounds reasonable that baldness may be another side effect of more testosterone (for some people).

Any idea how the southern Shaolin teacher retracted his testicles? (I always wondered if there was any risk to them not popping back out again...)

Herbal medicine can definitely have that effect, particularly on young men. My guess is it had something like lu rong in it (velvet deer antler). Long term use of those kinds of tonics is hard on the liver and kidneys though.

The fact that shih shui gung can be practiced long term is one of the big pluses.

My tang shou Tao teacher learned to retract his testicals from his karate teacher
He taught it as part of the noi gong training
I demonstrated being kicked in the groin and taking hits to the throat at the 1975 TST tournament in 1975
Afterwards master Hsu pulled me aside and told me it was quite nice to be able to take blows but that it was best not to let people hit you
I stopped doing it shortly after as it never felt nice to me
Years later I went into a gym in Sydney and the instructor shouted out
Look it's the man with the iron balls
He was a senior student of Hak Fu Chan and had seen me do the demo
I was a little embarrassed because I was with my sister and a new girlfriend

IDK, I'd probably have a t-shirt made that says "Iron Balls" Hansen. Lol.

Stories like that are fun.

Glad everything worked out.

Reminds me of a kung fu studio advertisement I saw once in LA.

The guy's name was "Tiger Yang" and he was holding a spear at groin level pointing up.

But hey man whatever works!

Darn, I never learned that in my karate classes!

Funny story, Wayne - small world, and it's funny how the timing of meeting people works...

It's done through controlling the muscles in the pelvis and lower abdomen, but I never got far enough in his system to know the specifics. Perhaps Mr. Iron Crotch Hansen would like to chime in? ;)

Testicle retraction used to be found in a number of Southern CMA styles, especially ones that focused on dynamic tension and iron body training. The way it was explained to me is that once you've acquired both iron body and the ability to retract the testicles, it makes your a superior fighter because now all you need to worry about is guarding the head. (This type of 'tough guy' fighting style has never been my cup of tea -- another reason why I stopped practicing it.)

HK-based Chowgar Mantis schools seem to still practice testicle retraction and teach it openly, and I've heard that some of the Okinawan Karate styles that are more heavily influenced by Southern CMA (e.g., Goju, Uechi Ryu) also include it as part of their higher-level Neigong training regimens.

I think my teacher learned it through Goju

I thought so too. With this type of training and how it is meant to be applied, the cost usually outweighs the benefits.

The teacher I mentioned learned the system from a master who immigrated to Taiwan from Fujian in the 1940s. The master was a blacksmith by trade, but also put his kungfu skills to use by moonlighting at the local red-light district as a bouncer. Other than iron body, his forte was inch power, which he perfected by diligently striking steel rods held in place by a vise. So whenever a customer got rowdy in the brothel, he would ask them to go outside and tell them that they could "take their best shot" at him 3 times before he would hit back only once. Usually that was all it took to end the fight.

Unfortunately, his vigorous training and "tough guy" lifestyle took a toll on his health. He developed hypertension and eventually died of a stroke in his late 50s.

My main take away from this thread is that a lot of people are hanging stuff from their junk on this board. Lol.

After too much time trying to post a pic...behold.... his name in charactors!

I swung weights for about a year. Was definitely worthy.
