"Chiao Chang-Hung", well-known Taiwanese martial artist, passed way in 2001.

Anybody know the proper characters for his name?

I suspect his surname might be 焦,but a cursory search of the top hits on his romanized named turns up nothing in the way of actual Chinese.

Many thanks.

Ok, I'm now fairly certain that his name was 喬長虹 / 乔长虹, but would appreciate confirmation from anyone in the know!

If there is any footage of him in practice out there that would be very nice to see.

Agreed. All I've ever seen is stills.

Same here. I know there is some footage but it's in a private library and considering his background (spy) I wouldn't be surprised if there was very little if none made for public :(

There is at least one videotape of him available:

Thanks for that, Ken.

I've heard a lot of stories about the man from various sources, including those who say he was caught and tortured pretty badly by the hongweibing before making it to Taiwan, to the extent that he needed a cane just to walk, etc., which may be one of the reasons there don't seem to be many (any?) extant films showing his movement despite his having survived into the 21st century.

And yet he appears to have had the respect of a lot of people, particularly in Tangshoudao circles.

Anything anecdotal or personal you'd like to add? Did you ever meet him?

I never met him - he seemed more well known outside of Taiwan. He arrived in Taiwan with the Nationalist Army in 1949, long before the Cultural Revolution. I don't know anything about his activities prior to arriving in Taiwan, but he relates his training background on the tape. The sort of training detailed on the tape (what he refers to as Xi Shui Gong) was not looked upon very favorably when I was in Taiwan.

Precisely. The dates wouldn't add up.

Not at all surprising. Indeed, what is surprising is how well respected he seems to have been in circles that I wouldn't expect to cotton to his sort of thing.

My long fist teacher had mentioned his name in my long fist class back in 1962. I was too young to be able to appreciate Chiao's training. Can't believe that the 2nd time I heard his name is already half century later.

Out of curiosity, why was this training not looked upon favorably?

The concept of stroking ones genitalia and hanging weights from them just rubbed the Chinese sensibility the wrong way.

You are just like me. We were too young to appreciate it.

Thank you, that is what I was curious about. I was not sure if you were referring to the practice itself (some of the same is accomplished using baguazhang's scissor legs from what I recall) or perhaps how or why people would take up the practice. I also learned a Hua Shan Longevity Gong set that utilizes a lot of shaking of the kidneys and the genitals during some of the movements, and wondered how common these types of practices are.
