Xie Peiqi wrote a small article for Wuhun magazine if I remember correctly covering some aspects of Fan style. I will try and find it.

It is my understanding that Dong was already an expert in Shaolin Lohan style when he met up with some Taoist monks in the mountains. The Taoist monks practiced circle walking as a form of meditation. Dong then simply appended his Lohan postures to the circle, and BaguaZhang was born. The Ba Pan Zhang stuff is bogus.
