Find 3 different ways to do the same thing

Postby johnwang on Sun Dec 10, 2017 11:11 am

In my yesterday's class, we worked on strategy such as:

- attack one leg then attack the other leg.

We started with

1. spring, shin bite.
2. leg lift, inner edge sweep,
3. inner hook, scoop.

After using 3 different ways to apply the same strategy, students have a good understanding about it. I don't know any instructor has ever used this teaching method. I wasn't taught this way. IMO, if you only know 1 way, you may not understand something fully. But if you can use 3 different ways to do the same thing. You will have a deep level understanding in your art.

Your thought?

Here is an example of inner hook, scoop combo that you attack 1 leg, you the attack another leg.

I'm still allergy to "push".

Pretty typical of how we approach our application work in Systema, set a problem and explore different solutions. Find it develops adaptability in the students

For MA, I've mainly seen it as several defenses to whatever. Not sure about attacking combos. For sports, definitely. I used to coach kids to have several ways to go this way or that.

I usually just do 2. I'm not doing it to understand the technique better, but that's definitely a good idea.

I sort of learned this idea going the other direction. For a given movement, consider various uses and interpretations. Find it in everyday life, place it there intentionally.

That is an idea that has true excellence.
I define internal martial art as unusual muscle recruitment and leave it at that. If my definition is incomplete, at least it is correct so far as it goes.
