The question is bothering me. Short sticks such as the kubotan, pasak, etc. seem to have no cognate in old Chinese weaponry, even though the traditional Chinese weapons seem to include all else imaginable.

'Course it could merely be a case in which I missed something...

Is a palm stick is indeed an old Chinese weapon? And if not, why not?

I think that most TCMA weapons come from military war weapons like spears, swords and other edged weapons. No place for a kubaton there. A knife is just as concealable and more deadly.

Something as in JW pic but with pointy points on both ends seem to be the TCMA weapon favored by one of my Taiji teachers GungFu brothers, he always has a pair in his small bag he carries. In practice they come in pair.

So while the kubotan is an impact or pressure weapon, small Chinese palm weapons punch holes. Is that a fair distinction?

Various similar weapons abound, with varying lengths and shape. Some have no ring, some have a pivot between the ring and piercer to allow rotation. Some are sharp, most seem not to be (more for striking pressure points). All seem to come in pairs, though. Usage of the short ones I imagine may not be that different from the kubotan.

Also somewhat similar is the "iron chopsticks" of some styles (e.g. Dai style xinyi) - longer and thinner, and again in pairs.

My teacher mentioned using sturdy chopsticks for some nasty applications, so I'm sure there's a kubotan equivalent used by someone somewhere in TCMA. Iron fans could be used the same.

Yes a lot of TCMA weapon seem to come straight out of the Devils toolbox. The one in the pic seem " homemade", maybe the posters own design

At the home of one of the old GungFu grand masters in Dalian there is TCMA's weaponry laying around everywhere, remember said while showing me that kind of long smoking pipe( all made of copper) and a long- haired fly whisker(where a sharp point was hidden within all that hair) that Chinese GungFu is very much about hiding ones GungFu. When he's out he always walk with a sturdy walking stick although he don't need it

Chen taiji has double maces, which are short iron rods.

Another thing I do not recall seeing in CMA (but, once again, I could have missed what was there) is a short stick used to add the power of persuasion to a wrist hold. It is an important aspect of kubotan and very effective in the right situation.
