If you can do this when you are 80, you should have good health.

Your thought?

Nice. I like that idea. 8-)

"Separate left/right foot", "turn and kick with heel", "Snake creeps down" and "Golden rooster" should also be good things to try to keep on doing at old age. Maybe also SC "back kick" and Xingyi "Dragon".

The Chinese have a saying that aging starts in the legs, so it's very important to keep leg strength. But it also seems to be very important to keep softness, flexibility and movability in both lower and higher back.

Maybe someone of the older generation here on the RSF can fill in a bit more?

If I could only do one exercise for health, it'd be slow deep squats.

It's good exercise for people that don't do much but it annoys me how they're promoting it as some kind of miracle there.

Agree! The arms movement doesn't mean much. It's the body and leg movement that's important. The foot sweep solo is also a good one.

I very much like the first ground exercise shown by John. We did something similar back in my dance days.

Golden Rooster Stands on One Leg is certainly on my 'old-age list', too. Great for fine-tuning centred balance.

And this one definitely: it's an exercise that activates every vertebra of the spine in all directions. Not only very important for the musculoskeletal system but also with regard to all the spinal nerves issuing from between the vertebrae and connecting to the various organs of the body. If some of these nerves become restricted or trapped that can lead to all kinds of other health problems, too (basic principle of osteopathy).

"It's good exercise for people that don't do much"

if you do not do too much, then one should do to the correct level of intensity.
as i understand it, the vid is saying that it is good exercise for ppl who do too much
when a watch spring is all wound up, you cannot wind it further
the tightness must be released if you wish to wind it up again

teh master featured has been down this road before
he's saying sometimes you need to slow down, and let nature take its course
or you might hurt yourself
cheers

At 74 I can easily say that circle walking along with neigong and form is the most effective way to keep fit and maintain good structure.

Truthfully, out of all of my patients a lack of strength is the biggest problem I’ve seen with the elderly. By far. Their lack of flexibility is almost entirely a result of being physically weak as are their problems with balance.

I once saw a 70 something former Soviet coach squat jumping 100kg, but I can’t find the video.

If you can clean and jerk 50kgs like this almost 80 year old can I think you are probably alright.

Peacedog is right. Preventing muscle athrophy is key. Thus squats with barbell.

When a Bagua guy walks in circle, he will move his leading leg first. Do you know the reason behind it?

Any exercise that you do regularly is "good" exercise. When I'm 80, I'd love to be able to do what I do now. There's some 90 year-old today who can do things I couldn't do when I was 20. I've been watching guys and gals like that for 20 years already. :)
