The ceremony reminds me of vow taking in Buddhism.

It is more common than that---couples getting married do the same thing, in broad outline, to the parents. And it represents kind of the same thing, acceptance into a new family with new relationship duties. As to how old the practice is, I have no idea.
take care,

In mandarin it's koutou in the west people say kowtow - from the Cantonese kau tau. You do it a lot at Chinese Buddhist funerals if you're related to the deceased. It looks like it developed around the Spring Autumn or Warring States periods.

The method of practicing this boxing art is nothing more than opening and closing, passive and active. The subtlety of the art is based entirely upon their alternations. Chen Xin
