Use this move in Taiji push hand

Postby johnwang on Thu Dec 20, 2018 11:32 am

You should be able to use this move in Taiji push hand game quite well. Your thought?

- Both you and your opponent have left side forward (uniform stance).
- You use left leading hand to grab on your opponent's left leading wrist and pull his left arm forward.
- You step in your right back leg behind his leading left foot ankle.
- You use right hand to pull his left ankle and take him down.

The following picture starts from you have right leg forward and your opponent has left leg forward (mirror stance). You don't have to move in your back leg here.

The following clip shows you have to move in your back leg.

Yes and no. In a competition, it might be permitted or it might not. The test for whether it would be good for a cooperative push hands exercise is whether there can be a give and take. I.e., it should be part of a pattern. He does it to me then I do it to him.

assuming a jacket wrestling context for the "push hands", something I would like to try to do --- hypothetically:

when you know you want to use your hand to pull on the leg,
- do the shin bite (is that what you call it), so my inside of foot hooks his ankle
- i'll use sticky leg to start to trap that ankle and feel it
- transition to my arm

- i feel a little weird about only one contact point to do this throw, though... I don't 100% understand how that one contact point is enough leverage ... please advise here?

This move is called 捞月(catch moon). If you

- lift your opponent's leading leg over your shoulder,
- pull your opponent's leading leg forward far enough,

he will fall. 1 point contact will work if you can reach to the extreme.

The reason that I said to use this move in Taiji PH because you almost don't need any set up for it. When you are in such low stance that your hand can easily reach to your opponent's leg, to keep pushing your opponent's arm make no sense.

I'm always impressed when I see people doing push hands like that.

When you only think about to "push" your opponent's arm, you may forget about to pull his leg.

There are many times in push hands that I find myself with the opportunity of a grabbed leg and have to just remind myself what I'm doing and what I'm training. I.e. I'm not usually just playing fight with stupid restriction but am trying to train specific skills within a fight looking context

When your opponent leads your hand down to his leg you take advantage
I have done the move shown hundreds of times
Don't try initiate a move like that or you will offer up your head
However if you are lead there take advantage
People here have talked about pushing the hand
You should never push the hand ,you can control the hand on the way to the body but pushing the hand is not the object
Striking the head or body is
Hand contact is your opponents ward off
Your aim should be to circumvent his contact and go for the target
Imagine boxing where the main aim is the opponents gloves it is rediculous
That is the main thing I have against a lot of pad work
A target off the body becomes the main aim
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

Some pad work is for developing sensitivity and reflexes (offensive and defensive). Then for more accuracy, smaller pads (held closer to the body targets), body armor, etc., are used to target closer to the body.

It could be considered different purposes of or different approaches to pad work.

It all depends on who is holding the pads and where they are getting you to hit
Most people I see doing pad work have not been trained by a good pad man
My training is all about using the arms as entry to the target
Not hitting the arms or hands
That doesn't mean you can't attack the arms but how you do is quite different to pad work
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form
