I was told that “rotation of the crotch” is not a desired movement in Tai Chi chuan. Can someone explain it to me?

Never heard of rotating the crotch per se.
I've heard of making the crotch rounded and the lowest vertebrae plumb by "sitting on the legs like a barstool" but never rotating the crotch

Don’t tilt the hips, keep them leveled.

I think the translation of kua胯 as crotch should be correct.

In humans, the crotch is the bottom of the pelvis, the region of the body where the legs join the torso, and is often considered to include the groin and genitals.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crotch

Zhuan 转 means turn or rotate

Zhuan Kua 转胯 is a Tai Chi term which means turn the crotch or rotate the crotch.

From my observation most practitioners push with their rear legs to move to a forward stance, maybe this is why Zhuan Kua is not applicable but why it is not a desired movement?

I think that ultimately an instruction like that is only useful in regards to a specific correction for a specific action in real time. I'm at a loss as to how rotating the crotch is even possible. But maybe that's the best way to correct what you were doing at the time?

It seems to me that most RSF discussions are "Should you do ...? instead of "why do you do ...?" If you want to pick up a $100 bill on the ground, you have to bend forward even if your Taiji teacher may tell you that you should always "keep head up".

If your opponent uses hip throw on you, by using footwork and "rotate your crotch", you can move your body from behind of your opponent to be in front of your opponent. You can then counter his hip throw with your hip throw. In CMA, this is called "beaver's waist", a very important CMA skill.

Do you have a video of this crotch rotation? I'm having trouble envisioning it

I don't have clip right now (my movie maker doesn't work on my new Window 10).

If your opponent's hip touches your belly, you have to rotate your hip/crotch

- back,
- to the side, and then
- in front of

your opponent's belly. Of course your opponent can do the same. You and your opponent then have a "hip rotation' contest. Your opponent moves in front of you. You move in front of him. He moves in front of you again. You move in front of him again. ... It's fun to drill this with your partner. It's good for releasing low back pain.

"Rotation of the crotch" is the thing everybody should have. And the old masters hold it off from their teaching. I have heard Bagua has their training specifically for rotating the crotch.

I find this clip on my computer. It's not hip throw counter hip throw. But the principle is the same.

Kua was translated as hip or hip joint, which is not correct that is all.
