Your opponent can sweep your left leading leg without re-position his left foot position.

This is when he is pushing you away and I don't think you can sweep his leg. If it is a normal forward stance you can resist the push and kick him between his legs. This is why he use this groin protective stance.

If you use this stance to attack, you will need to turn in your toes much more.

I think an opponent can sweep (or kick) the leading leg when the weight is on it no mater what the position of the foot.

The best angle for ankle foot sweep is to sweep the direction from your opponent's ankle toward his toes. If your opponent turns his ankle out, it will make your foot sweep easier. When you are standing south of your opponent, it's easier for your foot to move from NW to SE than to move from N to S.

To expose your ankle has the same issue as to expose your elbow joint.

The picture is a posture after a push, and this is from a routine and the following as follows:

“連貫動作
Continuous movement:
全身下矮擰腰身向右轉右脚屈膝收起兩手分摟上旋抱頭豎掌推出右脚前邁一步落地動作務求周身相隨成抱頭推山式
Your whole body lowers and your waist twists your body around to the right, your right foot withdrawing, knee bending, as your hands spread, brushing to the sides, and circle upward to cover your head as upright palms, which then push out, your right foot stepping forward. The movement should have whole-body coordination. This completes the posture of COVER THE HEAD AND PUSH THE MOUNTAIN. “(Paul Brennan Aug, 2017)

If you turn your foot in just to protect your groin area, IMO, it's too conservative approach. If you turn your foot in to bite on your opponent's leg and control his leg, it's more aggressive approach.

the only refernce to what might would have been a free fighting bout is the supposed leitai challenge ZMQ was to have ahainst Wan laizhen(spelling?) of the Ziramen style in Nanjing. if remember right its ,entilned in Smith's 'Masters & methods'.........Where can i read about ZMQ's other (almost)fights ?

Light inside knee turning should be nuf for protection valuables for the beginners,
later you may learn pulling them up - not to hard stuff ,really; and even pulling them inside /I lost interest in such training somewhere in the meddle of it/

That particular bit was according to T.T. Liang per Ray Hayward's book "Lessons with Master Liang", but it's discussed in "Cheng Man Ching: Master of five excellences", "Tai Chi: The Supreme Ultimate Exercise For Health and Self Defense" (with Robert Smith), "Master Cheng's New Method of Taichi Ch'uan Self-Cultivation", and even online there are various pages describing him staying with Yang Cheng Fu and accepting challenges on his behalf.

There is a difference between turning your knee and turning your hip joint inward. Knee turning will damage the knee, and hip turning in a way will protect the testes from a frontal attack.
