ground question: cartwheel pass?

Postby everything on Fri Dec 12, 2008 3:44 pm

Question for those doing some ground grappling: have you used the cartwheel guard pass? What did you like or dislike?

I'm attracted to it because it appears fun, but I'd be worried about slamming my knee into my training partner's head even in fully cooperative mode (or more worried about someone slamming a knee into MY head).

While I haven't personally done it, I have had it done to me.
My thoughts are that if you pull off the cartwheel correctly it should be not problem.
Otherwise, perhaps you will win your match by ko :P

My signature pass... lol. I recommend learning it and drilling it to death. The agility pays serious dividends in a scramble on top of having the pass in your repetoire.

I've always wanted to try it because the transition to back looks so easy. I figure my training partner will think it's a gimmick or something. Think I'll stick with other passes for the moment.

Hehe, if I'm going to be known for something, it might as well be AWESOME.
There are variations, if he's playing a sitting guard and you catch him sleeping you can shoot straight overtop and sink your hooks. If he's more cautious you can do a chest press to mush him into north south. *shrug* It's not for everyone, I play a very different game than most.

I think if you can do a controlled handstand then go for it.

It's not a pass people are usually expecting and it's always good to have another trick up your sleeve, that's pretty much what the game is all about using a move they're not ready for.

In fact I just picked up a SBGi DVD where it teaches you how to use a guard against their guard, trippy stuff but the whole idea is your using moves their not expecting. Please don't ask me to explain it... :P

Didn't Sakuraba used to do that? He was awesome at pulling off moves like that.

Yeah, that isn't the best clip of Sakuraba pulling off that move, it's just the first one I found with a quick search.
I recall Sakuraba using the cartwheel effectively, I think against one of the Gracies, in an old Pride match.
That video also shows some of Sak's other cool moves, jumping over an opponent's defense, double-chopping opponents, and other moves that they just didn't expect because most people didn't use them.
The thing I really like about Sak is the way he is relaxed in the ring...he patiently waits for an opening and then quickly exploits it. He'll always be the greatest, IMO.

from what I've seen, only Sak and Fedor seem so relaxed. I don't recall his cartwheel pass, but remember the double chop. Will have to search some more later. Thanks for posting the vid.

All this time I thought you guys were talking about the hand stand guard pass but using a different name...
