Who was Shi Ming's teacher(s); Mind over Matter Expert

Postby yeniseri on Tue Aug 06, 2019 1:29 pm

I was stumped today when someone asked me who was the teacher of Shi Ming (Mind over Matter book!). PBS showed a profiled of him when they were doing a documentary on Chinese Health Practices in China.
I have never seen anything about him in a 'real life Q&A' except for something in Taiji forum questioned by G Faulkner of the UK. Is anyone aware of who was the teacher of Shi Ming? Thanks

If I remember correctly his main teacher was Wei Shuren.

Shi Ming was an interesting one. As far as I can find out he had two main taiji teachers:

(i) Cui Xingsan, student of Heng Shoushan, who studied under Liu Dekuan;
(ii) Zhu Huaiyuan, who was one of the senior disciples of Yang style teacher Wang Yongquan (so-called 'Old Six Roads' Yang style)

A lot of accounts say that what he learned with Cui Xingsan was a mix of Wu/Hao and Wu (Jianquan) style, which doesn't really chime with Liu Dekuan's lineage - it's a bit of a mystery really. IMO the form his students practice looks like a mix of Yang and Wu/Hao, so make of that what you will.

Probably from Wang Yongquan I got Wei Shuren. At least I remembered this lineage correctly.
