Slapping the foot during kicks

Postby oragami_itto on Sun Sep 01, 2019 9:02 am

In some forms, you slap your foot when you kick.

Do you practice any? What is the purpose?
Do you kick your hand, or do you slap your foot?

I find it makes people who can't do it really annoyed with you because you can. That might not be its intended purpose, but it works for me :)

Uh, yes...

Do you kick your hand, it so you slap your foot?

No, you slap the side of the foot or the ankle. That's where someone might try to grab the foot.

What is the purpose?

So you won't forget the application, to slap away a hand that tries to grab your foot.

They are also good for demonstrations. If you first go very slow and calm and then suddenly slap your foot loudly it will cause some reactions... like girls shouting out... (shock obviously) That's kinda fun.

I was taught the opposite, to kick a raised hand instead of slapping the foot. Same idea, to break a grab using a kick or to kick through a clinch or a wrist control

Yes. This video covers reasons for slapping the foot (e.g., push hand away, strike, distraction (high/low strategy), etc.

Why do we slap the foot in Shaolin Kung Fu forms? 青龙探爪 qing long tan zhua, the Green Dragon's spying claw is a common Shaolin technique. Explained by Joshua Viney:

Both, actually. The slap represents an attack to the face and the kick is to the groin. Try attacking someone like that, it is very effective. All of my kicks are in unison with hands techniques. The power should be about 75% kick and 25% slap. The only reason to slap your foot is to stretch. If you can do it properly then you are athletic enough. It also looks/sounds cool. Breaking a foot hold like that is proposterous.. A lot of movements are exaggerated like this purely to improve Jibengong.

If you can still do this at your old age, your flexibility is still good.

What about spinning lotus kick
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

Your hand position can check your foot contact position.

In Chen taiji we have swing kick (before drop down then golden rooster).

Although it's called a kick the application I've been shown is a sweep - the upper body turns one way the lower body the opposite so it makes some sense to slap the foot.
The method of practicing this boxing art is nothing more than opening and closing, passive and active. The subtlety of the art is based entirely upon their alternations. Chen Xin

Many people may think that the Taiji lotus kick can be used for foot sweep. If we look at the foot sweep require, the lotus kick doesn't meet those requirement.

- The rooting leg has to bend.
- The knee has to bend before the kick.

It’s a gymnastics move + a reminder/practice to not lean away too much.

As application to slap away an hand that try to grab ones foot I really can not get my mind around.
My leg has been caught uncountable times while trying to plant a kick, this was back when I tournament and Dojo fought/sparred, you either quickly throw a punch to opponents face or grab onto him...won’t do to slap at the opponents grabbing hand/arm, while trying to do something like that one will be slammed to the ground

Is foot to hand slapping while kicking found in southern styles of GongFu, such as in Fuijianese White-Crane gongfu ?
