Passing of Brian Kennedy

Discussion on the three big Chinese internals, Yiquan, Bajiquan, Piguazhang and other similar styles.

Passing of Brian Kennedy

Postby kenneth fish on Tue Sep 10, 2019 5:48 pm

Just learned that Brian Kennedy passed away. He was a friend, despite us never having met in person - we corresponded for years, spoke on the phone, and always agreed that one day we would meet up in person. Too late now.

Brian once told me of being mistaken for me by Pan Yue, an oddball personality in the Taiwan martial arts scene. He walked up to Brian and his wife in the street, and said accusingly "you are Ken Fish"! No matter how Brian tried to convince him otherwise, he insisted that Brian was me. This apparently went on for some time and in different venues. We agreed that if we ever met up in Taiwan we would seek out Pan and tell him that we were both, indeed, Ken Fish.

I will miss him.

Here's an article Brian wrote, for those unfamiliar with him:

So sad to hear this news.

I never met Brian, but like many here I corresponded with him quite a few times. He was a pretty cool dude, a non-conformist, a seeker of knowledge and a destroyer of false idols.

I got to work with him on his books for North Atlantic, and it was always a pleasure. He sent me an amazing library of Chinese martial arts books, none of which I can read, but as a book person it was an invaluable gift.

When my son was born, Brian and his wife sent us a Taoist talisman for good fortune. My son turned 12 today and his life has been nothing but golden good luck and happy coincidences.

Thanks Brian. You'll be missed.

I’m sure Brian is having a drink with DeVere, reminiscing about the Flower.

Although I have been a long term Taiwan resident like Brian, I never had the chance to meet him there. His work is highly regared, his BJJ endeavours at his age do need much respect.

Very sad to hear of his passing - he was always a thoughtful writer and poster here. I did notice that he had not posted for quite a while now.
