Ma Chuanxu 马传旭 has passed away

Postby wushutiger on Sun Mar 01, 2020 2:18 am

My Liang Bagua Zhang uncle, and the families most senior practitioner Ma Chuanxu 马传旭 passed away at 6 pm on the 27th of February at home in Beijing. He was 87. A sad loss to us all.

I restored and subtitled etc this video which features him and I didn't get a chance to show him due to the corona virus lock down here, and now he is gone. Too soon.

Very sad to hear Lao Ma passed away, he was a baguazhang legend, a very skilled master and a kind person. I was lucky enough to practice with Ma Chuanxu back in 2007-2008 in Beijing.RIP Ma laoshi.

Very sorry to hear of Ma Chuanxu’s passing— condolences to his family and baguazhang colleagues. I went back and read again Jarek Szymanski’s interview with Ma from several years ago (Jarek had trained Liang baguazhang in the early 1990s). For me the interview with Ma Chuanxu remains the best of the MA interviews Jarek shared at China From Inside and really showed that Ma had something special. Requiescat in pace.

From Jarek’s interview with Ma Chuanxu:

I emphasize Bagua basics a lot. They are very important and if the student does not practice them correctly, according to my requirements, then it is like throwing all the things I teach away. It is not that I'm conservative but the problem is that many students do not study hard and never get satisfactory level of basic skills. Learning techniques and routines is without any value if the basics are not good.

I heard as well - very sad that I was ultimately not able to meet him, despite some chances that for one reason or another did not materialize in the end. Jarek's interview with Ma was a key factor in leading me to my teacher. He definitely had something special!
