from the XY, or XYLH system?
Yes. Some might see it as heresy but it seems to work for me.
5 elements:
- metal - vertical - hammer, uppercut, downward hook...
- earth - horizontal - hook, heavy backfist, forearm...
- wood - piercing - waist level punch, lunging jab, driving cross...
- fire - sharp (explosive power) - jab, light backfist...
- water - spiral - spiral hook, spiral uppercut...
Take all these concepts and apply them to the 7 stars (e.g. sharp elbow, spiral knee, piercing headbutt) done in 8 directions
Also the 5 element moves contain grabs -> does this open up qinna variations? Again yes.
Adding XYLH I get level changes, jumping, spinning additions with many more moves plus extra power from compression, twisting and expansion. Aside from great power they go well with wrestling & throws.

I don't disagree with this. I can't. I cross train to.
But the things I have described above act as a framework. For example there are not many styles that teach headbutts. With the above framework I have at least 6 distinct types that when mixed with direction & power (short, long, jump) make a lot more. Similarly 10 elbows were enough because they blow out with the extra dimensions.
I train variations, make some up & run through moves in shadow routines. Sometimes I reinvent things that others have probably thought of. Sometimes I rediscover things I learnt a long time ago.
Sometimes I go and learn something completely different from someone else. It might not fit the above stuff but if it's useful I don't disagree with. For example there are no sacrificing throws in XY/XYLH. On matts they are not a bad idea when caught out to apply a reversal.
In sparring/tournaments - I don't care about what technique I use or where I learnt it. I just care about testing things out, learning & refining along with what is legal & also reasonable to my sparring partners.
