Flying Elbow (飞铮 fei1 Zang1)

This is a Cantonese colloquial jargon to describe the elbow flying off the position of sinking the elbow and dropping the shoulder (this is the same as sinking the shoulder and dropping the elbow in Taijiquan). So, teachers of Southern Chinese Martial Arts use this jargon very often to remind their students to keep their elbows pointing downward in a strike. This is the same more or less in Taijiquan, Xingyiquan, and Baguaquan (you can read more about it in D_Glenn's 2015 post entitled: Relax the shoulders drop the elbows).

This is one of the variables to differentiate between strikes using brute force and those not using brute force. If you observe some martial arts' practitioners and some boxers they strike by contracting the arms with shrugging shoulders and elbows flying off centre. This is normal for anyone contracting his or her shoulder and arm to deliver a strike with a straight arm. Keeping the shoulder and elbow down will produce a bent arm with more focus on stretching the arm to produce the strength rather than a mix of stretching and contracting. Some Taijiquan practitioners do not stretch their torso and limbs will miss out on developing their strength as well.
