The pentagram in western tradition is not an evil symbol. The pentagram with the point up is a symbol of the ascendency of spirit over the 4 elements. When tracing the pentagram it can be used to banish evil and negative energies or entities depending on the direction it is traced. Some directions are invoking the energy and not banishing.
Evil pentagrams are those which are drawn where the points are uneven and those without closed points, and lastly with the point down, which represents the material world being superior to the quintessence or spirit.
