RIP Dan Docherty

Saw this online today:

"I am sad to hear the passing of Dan Docherty today. I didn`t know him personally, but I did meet him a few times at the British open tai chi championships. His contribution to tai chi in the UK will not be forgotten and I know he will be missed by his many students. RIP Dan"

Very sad, I met him a few times at the Oxford competition
he organised. Gained a lot of experience competing in push hands there, also one of the few places to see full contact
taiji in UK.
I have fond memories of him as when my daughter was about 15 there were too few entrants in her category so he moved her up to senior women's class which she won. I have a nice pic of him presenting her with her prize - a real unassuming quiet gent. RIP

Dan and his students provided my first taste of Taijiquan before I moved to China. I remember him as devoted to his art, skilled in his practice, well-educated, forthright, and a thoroughly upstanding chap. A fellow Scot, to boot.
May he rest in peace.

Mr. Docherty is known for his strong views on the history of t'ai chi ch'uan and is seen as a polarizing figure within the world of t'ai chi. In articles and interviews he has spoken of confrontations with other t'ai chi teachers, including an infamous meeting with one Shen Hong-xun, a master who claimed to have and to teach "empty force", or the ability to move a person without physical contact. The meeting ended up with Mr. Docherty pouring water over the head of Shen Hong-Xun, not to prove that empty force does not exist but to suggest that Master Shen was unable to summon and use it at that time.

Another hero lost! I never met him but we exchanged email many years ago. He attempted to reach audiences and share his vision through his outreach and worshops/seminars in Europe.
I never made it to his UK sessions but he surely be missed by many

May he rest in peace.

Oh, that's sad news. I wasn't a student of his but I met him, participated in some workshops, had a few conversations with him and did friendly tuishou with him quite a few times in France and in Germany. He was a multifaceted man, totally dedicated to his art, highly skilled, very intelligent, often funny, could also be very 'challenging' when he wanted to be. He was a really special guy.
Rest in peace, Dan.
