I'd just pick a Bagua school you like the look of and go learn it. Each branch is a bit different.

Learn from a real life teacher. This should be your outmost concern right now.

Make sure you do foundation work every day to supplement your practice. Plenty of material by He Jinghan on Youtube.

Start with the Asian squat. It's daily work, the more the better. Browse YT for videos. You need to filter the good stuff.

Good luck!

Correct, productive circle walking has more to do with a properly perceived awareness of what is felt internally while practicing than anything to do with the external physical aspects of the footwork and postures.

These factors can't be adequately learned from books or videos, imo, but can only be received from a live teacher with personal experience and expertise in the particulars of the style they practice and teach.

Even a mediocre teacher of any authentic style is far better than wasting time and effort in self-instruction. If or when you connect with a better teacher, you will then be better prepared to benefit from their more advanced experience and teaching ability.

Indeed, it's possible after building a proper foundation to progress via distance learning but in person correction is still needed. A lot of times these arts are taught cyclically and new concepts have to be worked into material already learned.

I don't think you could go wrong with the material put out by Tom Bisio - you also could supplement the online learning with attendance at his workshops

https://www.internalartsinternational.c ... nal-level/

Foundational Level Curriculum

The lessons included in Authentic Ba Gua Zhang Distance Learning Program

Ba Gua Yin Yang Meridian Patting Nei Gong
The starting point for learning Ba Gua Zhang. An important precursor to more advanced energetic and martial practices.

The Six Qi Cultivation Exercises
Develop power and sensitivity through these subtle, yet profound internal exercises.

Ba Gua’s 12 Standing Postures
The 12 standing postures are critical to developing “Sinew Strength” and the strong foundation necessary for true achievement in Ba Gua Zhang.

Foundational Partner Exercises
Partner drills that develop power, distancing and timing.

Applications of Circle Walking Nei Gong
Self-defense applications based on body alignment, internal transformation and footwork. Lead the opponent into emptiness and seize their root.

Dao Yin Exercises
A simple yet powerful daily routine that regulates the body’s Qi Dynamic, thereby promoting health and longevity.

Basic Zhan Zhuang (Post Standing)
This form of “Standing Meditation” is the key to integrating the body and developing “whole body power.”

The 28 Foundational Exercises (Ji Ben Gong)
The fundamental building blocks of the art. Each exercise has a specific purpose that operates on a physical, energetic and martial level.

Ba Gua Circle Walking Nei Gong
A profound practice that is the foundation of Ba Gua’s unique footwork and the basis of Ba Gua Zhang as a martial art.

Surprise add-on to the program
Surprise add-ons are extra materials that help explicate various facets of the Program – PDF’s, audio recordings, Q & A applications.

I would like to know as well.

It seems Dong said the circle walking is the most important part.

However his students or grand students with XingYi backgrounds likely did zhan zhuang from xingyiquan before they learned baguazhang.

XingYi is older than BGZ (regardless of if it dates to Yue Fei or not).
In that sense zhan zhuang is older than the circle walking from Dong.

But it still seems it must be “modern” from those who did the “big three” IMA (Sun and others).
Since Dong doesn’t seem to mention it (or if so, this knowledge seems lost).
Plus the XYQ and Yiquan masters Guo and Wang emphasized zhan zhuang as the key.

So we inherit both as “modern” people.

Very good resource for those interested in the history and practices of Bagua.

Don't know if back issues are still available

I thought the basic rule was "go fast and turn left."

Wait, maybe that's NASCAR...

The tighter the circle, the harder it's for knees and hips.

D_Glenn (was that his username?) made quite a few excellent posts years back. I wonder what happened to him.

He is a BGZ practitioner and wrote about the cranio-sacral pump, how different animals build different structures and represent various combat approaches. I'd recommend you try searching for his posts here.

I personally haven't practiced it a lot, but you can do a lot of twisting and turning stepping in a linear path way. The footwork is cool though. And IMO if you want to know what it's about, try to move as fast and silently as possible through a large tightly packed crowd. People described me as a gummy person lol. Also good way for starting to sense gaps, noticing energy move before people do physically.

Over the course of the past many decades, I have rarely encountered anyone who practiced any style of Pa Kua Chuan in a way which enabled them to effectively apply it in realtime self-defense fighting. Most are merely form set collectors performing martial dance routines. :-\
