Master Yang Chengfu died in his early 50's from sudden GI Tract complications following rapid weight gain from excessive eating, with symptoms suggesting a possible ruptured appendix, at a time when modern Western Medicine facilities and treatment methods were rare in most parts of China. :-\

What is "thé death"? Is it when you drink too much tea and die?

Actually, it's quite understandable. He was very poor as a child and worked hard. And when he became famous and was invited to big dinners every night... He had never learned how to control his eating and had always had to eat as much as possible to even feel full. Sad, but his condition was probably more a consequence of his childhood than a lack of discipline.

Taiji master Li Jing-Lin did not allow YCF to teach in public. After YCF left his students, YCF died a year later (not happy?).

One day, Li Jing-Lin and my teacher Chang Dong-Sheng walked in the park that YCF was teaching. Li told Chang, "Look at that YCF is cheating on his students again." Li and YCF didn't get along.

Ynag Chengfu was a sick man and he hid his health problems as a way to present taijiquan when few knew what it was!
He allegedly had diabetes (tye 2) and stated to be on IV hookup prior to his death. In those days, admirers of people of 'status' did not divulge such things because of the 'rice bowl' syndrome.

His death was mysterious only because it was hiddern from the public, as it were, "keep them guessing". It still is en vogue today amongst various cultic tai chi organizations as a way to consolodate the troops and present a facade.

:),

Sadly, but death 40 -50 y.o., "full time" practitioner isn`t rare thing.
From TCM point of v., their fire was to high. They (mostly)are driven by power, gained from the trainings, harmony is lost and heart breaks. I personally know two such cases : one friend of mine, Choi Lee fut teacher died on heart attack,in age of 50, second- hard style, saved his arse by firing of some heart nerves in hospital and later, lost interest in trainings.

Doc Stier's diagnosis sounds bang on the mark. Judging by the accounts of the students who were actually around him in the months before his death (Fu Zhongwen, Zeng Rubo, Yang Shouzhong), he had some kind of gastro-intestinal disorder (possibly a hernia, 'shan qi' in Chinese) for much of 1935, and took a folk remedy based on recommendations of a family friend which made it worse.

Other long-term students like Huang Jinghua confirm that he had a habit of over-eating, which was fine when he was training for several hours every day in his 20s, but by the time he was in his 50s was v bad for his health. Would not be surprised if he had Type II diabetes at the end as well.

Wasn’t that the same Li that YCF made to lose hold of his sword rather quickly during a fencing bout ?

Li was a warlord also a sword master.

My teacher told me that he knew 2 secretes in Chinese history.

1. The truth of YCF's death. Li won't allow Yang to teach in public.
2. 汪精卫 Wang Jingwei was a double spy and was not a traitor. The assassin order to Wang was to hurt him and not to kill him. Wang was 1 of the "4 good looking guys" in modern Chinese history.
