I'm curious about flexible weapons. Can anyone recommend any material, books or videos, that covers the basics of how to work with rope darts or meteor hammers?

Haha! If you seriously intend to teach yourself flexible weapons like that, I would suggest having a good health insurance policy that will cover your forthcoming injuries, and also some good protective equipment like a motorcycle helmet with full face guard, kendo style chest armor, etc. LOL ;D

Yeah - I’d do that - pad up within helmets and body armour and just start playing around. You will hurt yourself :) I remember watching a video of a Chinese girl teaching herself - there was a lot of being hit in the head!

I don't know much about rope dart, but I've seen Li Jinheng do it a couple of times. He was on the Beijing wushu team.

lol, well, you know, starting with a rubber ball, going slow.

I've been doing a lot of work with whips of various lengths lately, and yeah, slap the hell out of myself constantly. Not going to be swinging anything that could break my thousand dollar teeth. :D

There are all kinds of basic drills and technique videos on youtube, just wondering if anybody was familiar with more traditional content.

Nice, thanks.
I love the energy of the flexible weapons.

I've never tried flexible weapons, but watching Li Jinheng in person is impressive. A co-worker studied at Li Jinheng's school and one of the things he learned was three section staff; from what he told me he battered himself pretty good!

Jasoni-san: Please be advised, if you haven't already discovered this truth, that when moving with sufficient speed to avoid slack along the length of a flexible weapon, even a rubber ball can definitely hurt you. -shrug-

Agreed, even a tiny piece of string can slice you open, much less something with mass.
Along that line of thought, I advise against playing around with a 4 foot bullwhip when you're naked and aren't that good at it. Like before a shower when you have a big bathroom and a new whip.

There was some cool rope dart work in series 3 of Umbrella Academy - mainly the last episode. And the latest Dr Strange.

And also the chain whip fighting in the Netflix series opener of Marco Polo: Hundred Eyes. 8-)

This guy's got a couple of good videos. Not tutorials, exactly, but good.

The weapon itself teaches you-- I actually don't think there's a huge need for tutorials, etc. I'd recommend eye protection for learning, and maybe a mouthguard if you find anyone loony enough to want to figure out applications. Eyes are hard to fix, and teeth are expensive.
