Sorry to hear that... you sure he wouldn't still be alive if he just handed over his belongings?

I'm being insensitive, I know. In some very bad situations it's easier to just kill the victim outright than to deal with potential backlash... South America comes to mind...

Poverty breeds violence, or not? Less to lose, desperation, even law enforcement being scared to do their job. Concrete jungle

If I'm in the gym and lift a weight, I also don't think about the details of my nutrition plan... :)

The animals that do things like this, do it because they can...People encountering them choosing not to be victims react in different ways.

Until one is in such a situation it may be hard for them to understand what they would do, or not do...

The trial is about about my uncles death, an elderly Mexican man, part of the. SF. gay Community
a noted film location agent....who was robbed for his camera, getting shot in the process ..,

Those that did it, caught after robbing someone else,,,some might say a life style...who knows..

George Gascón the DA at the time,,,sitting in a room listening to him, brief our family and relatives.

Gascon: "now remember don't say anything bad about those who killed your uncle,,,it might cause the jury to have sympathy for them" :o

5 yrs later finally the trial is in progress , hopefully bringing closure to a sad event...
although being its SF...never know what will happen....

Just to address the baseball bats
When I was a Sydney Sharpie I went to a place called John Henreys
It was full of inner city tough guys
All the bouncers carried sawn off baseball bats
Any fights they just wailed in with the bats
They gave it to one of the Balmain boys one night
The Balmain boys just waited their time and came back with iron bars
Where I live now if you have a baseball bat in your car without proof you are going to a game and the other equipment it a criminal offence

Re: trashing cars with baseball bats (and bricks, etc). Funny story. A guy's girlfriend or his wife came home from a late night of drinking and saw a fancy car outside her man's house and went ballistic on the car thinking he was cheating on her.

it was his brother visiting.

If was funny tho to watch her trash the car from my balcony. I'm not sure who called the police but the noise must have woken up half the neighborhood :) Small town :)

He just hates any thread he can't dog on someone's "poor shen fa" in.
Could we do a thread where we all post videos trying to mimic that Duck-style demo someone posted?
A crew of us becoming the terror that flaps in the night has wheels.

You have the option whether to pick up your Guan Dao or not. But when you pick up your Guan Dao and swing at your opponent, you intend to cut off your opponent's head.

There is only 1 decision - whether you want to fight or not. If you select fighting, you have to finish it.

If that was directed at me I’m not smart enough to understand it

I somehow agree with Wayne`s initial post.
Wen in the fight, you don`t try to do something,
you just answering, or not.
This is the time when your training is put on a try..

There are 2 sides in the fight issue, to wit, 1 side wants to relieve you of what you own, deprive/separate from you what is not theirs or just for spite, they want to harm you because they smell the
fear and they believe they can do what they want and no one will stop them.
Side 2 realizes something is not right but because of sitautional awareness (of some kind or another ??? ) so s/he takes
steps to avoid a confrontation and realizes this is insufficient so s/he has to step up their level of 'fight in the dog' ;D , they have to make sure (as part of self defense) i.e. in defense of themselves, freinds or family, that when Side 1 is dropped, they do not get up, or they will thinbk twice about doing so. When you slam the mofo (pardonne moi s'il vous plait ;D ) you walk away knowing you saved the world from another thug, whose intent was not nice.

Agree! Take your opponent down, borrow your own momentum and take off ASAP before cops arrive.

I prefer to think of it as stopping or ending it rather than finishing it. If everybody can calm down and stop being idiots without a punch being thrown, so much the better. If I can sucker somebody threatening and put them down, I'll take it.

The last thing I want is to "fight". Too much risk. Fair fights are for suckers.

To play 100% defense can be another option.

One day, one of my students got into a bar fight. Within 10 - 15 minutes, his opponent threw many punches at him. None of those punches could land on him. After 10 - 15 minutes, his opponent sat down on the chair, didn't know why all his punches had missed, and got upset at himself. The fight stopped there, and nobody got hurt.

In the past many years, every time that I met my MA friends, I would ask them to throw 20 punches toward me. I start to enjoy playing 100% defense very much. The way that I look at this is, as long as I can block 20 punches, even if I have not land any punch on my opponent, I still consider myself as a winner.

No matter what your primary fighting style or preferred method of combat is, if you don't have well developed defensive skills in realtime physical confrontations, you might not last long enough to effectively apply your striking, kicking, and grappling techniques, even if those skills are really good.

As such, my first and top priority in any fighting situation is to evade and neutralize attacks, i.e. get the hell out of the way of incoming force, until the opportunity to apply finishing countermeasures appears. ymmv.
