You catch the "skin" of the bag (very sturdy upholstry fabric) with the creases of your fingers. We use this type of grabbing to catch skin or clothing. In a year or so of practicing with one of these my "meat hooks" have improved considerably. Filled with dry rice the bag weighs 6 to 8 pounds, so it's a good workout for the fingers, hands, and forearms as well. They may not be as well suited to some other types of grabbing exercise, but I have found them to be very effective for what I use them for.

Yes! It's a shape of Chinese "粽子 (Zong Zi) - rice dumplings wrapped in leaves" that people eat on the May 5th Chinese festival.
