We do this with phone books covered in duct tape. But I think that bags can work the grip differently.

If you want to use it for throwing then you should seal the bag diagonally so it will be 3 dimension instead of flat as 2 dimension.

We use these bags a lot in our ba gua classes to develop a particular kind of grip. The object is to catch the bag without using your thumb. You catch the "skin" of the bag (very sturdy upholstry fabric) with the creases of your fingers. We use this type of grabbing to catch skin or clothing. In a year or so of practicing with one of these my "meat hooks" have improved considerably. Filled with dry rice the bag weighs 6 to 8 pounds, so it's a good workout for the fingers, hands, and forearms as well. They may not be as well suited to some other types of grabbing exercise, but I have found them to be very effective for what I use them for.

Yes! It's a shape of Chinese "粽子 (Zong Zi) - rice dumplings wrapped in leaves" that people eat on the May 5th Chinese festival.

Mmm - sticky (glutinous) rice, I like to eat it any time (not just on a holiday)!

i have been using a 15 lb sand bag we had on the tour ... playing catch with my co workers ... this bag was a lot more stiff the the "throwingbags" though ...
the method of griping clothing you showed us worked very well with some bjj guys i was playing with who like to wear a gi ... it was not dependent on my thumb.

If the bag has 3 dimensions then you can grab on more areas then just the 2 dimension flat bag. The important part is what you put in it. It's not a good idea to fill up with 100% steal balls (BB). It's better to mix 60% steal balls (BB) and 40% green bean (or wooden bean, or plastic bean) so you won't get arthritis when you get old. You can use it to develop very strong grip and beautiful body shape (tight ass, firm chest, slim muscle, ...). I'll suggest the weight between 17 lb to 20 lbs. I had a 23 lbs bag before. It was very tiresome after the work out.
