Walk in Low Stance

Discussion on the three big Chinese internals, Yiquan, Bajiquan, Piguazhang and other similar styles.

Walk in Low Stance

If we always walk with our "upper leg parallel to the ground" then we can blend training and daily life in one. This kind of walking exist in Bagua (not sure the requirement is the same - upper leg parallel to the ground), SC, and long fist. It should exist in all CMA styles IMO.

Translation: Keep body vertical, Bend down, upper leg be parallel to the ground, walk big step, keep body as low as possible, walk as long as possible. Benefit - enhance leg muscle, stable footwork, and leg endurance.

Will it bother you if you walk like this in public? My teacher once did a "human flag" on the street in Taipei and it didn't bother him a bit.

When my teacher was a kid he walked from his home to the park and back doing beng quan stepping every step of the way.
He said to me about it "James, everyone in Tienjin practiced martial arts so it was normal. You shouldn't do this" lol

I get used to hang on a pole of traffic sign. When people passing by and give me a strange look, it doesn't bother me a bit. If I'm doing something that the general public don't understand, it their problem and not mine. I have no obligation to explain what I'm doing to anybody.

I was doing Tai Chi on the top story of a parking garage once, and heard an old Filipino security guard radio in that some strange guy was up there doing some "Shadow Karate." ;D

Do I mind if I do it in public? Public is the only place I do it :)

I have seen people do something very similar to this in xinyiliuhequan.

Baguazhang walking is of course in some ways similar, but with more requirements (also, some methods go even lower).

Any would look very strange in public ;D

Great training, but I don't se walking to work like this. I a xing i mile in the warmer weather on the jogging paths of my neighborhood, I get a few strange looks from joggers and passers by, but it's the police that really give me a look.
The point . is absolute

Sure it might look strange in public, but no more strange than some of the folks that hang around the parks anyways!

I've done things like it. The main issue with it is that you are conspicuous and a lightning rod to whatever ambient strangeness might be around.

Dude, you live in Boulder, which automatically precludes you from having any sort of grasp whatsoever as to what's considered strange and what's normal. Damn hippies!

If I did that low walk in public, someone would offer me a banana.
I define internal martial art as unusual muscle recruitment and leave it at that. If my definition is incomplete, at least it is correct so far as it goes.
