of course it does not take the shape of the animal- the internal styles are more about the essence of the animal - the spirit- while shaolin may imitate the spirit , shape, and movements...

the Ma style i practice has a simple palm change and 8 animal changes
snake, sparrow hawk, dragon, unicorn (qilien), phoenix, lion, bear, monkey
in my understanding the most important for the style is the walking and the hand position

i don't know how close it is to your style's monkey forms as I have never seen them....
