To learn without a Teacher?

Postby golden-tree on Fri Mar 20, 2009 7:54 am

Hi :)

I got a discussion with a person i met on a seminar last week.

He said that he is just learning Xing Yi Quan by performing the 5 fists and the 12 animal forms and visiting 2 seminars in the year. He started learning the five fists just by reading books and wachting videos on it. I think his technique was not bad...

But I was a little bit skeptical. I think it ist important to practice every day on your own, but don't you think you need more regular corrections by your teacher to make progress?

So is it possible to learn Xing Yi just by reading books, watching some clips and visiting 2 seminars in a year? What do you think about it?

This topic must get threshed out at least 10 times a year.
It is utterly impossible to learn the internal mechanics of xingyi without a teacher to physically correct you (its hard enough to learn with a teacher correcting lol). :P

Nope.

You will also, 1) train in some seriously bad mistakes and ingrain them, 2) risk training stuff that might seriously mess up your health down the line, especially if training power practices of some sort, and 3) nope.

D.

Sarcasm. Oh yeah, like that´ll work.

Depends on the person.

That said a good teacher is a must.

That said.... This shit aint rocket science.

That said I've been doing this for a really long time so you should ignore everything I've previously typed.

If your teacher is very good and the seminars intense, I think you can get something out of it. But then your main focus should be basics, and what you are taught, you need to learn very, very well. Don't mix it with various stuff you read or watch. To build a foundation you need jibeng gong and a lot of repetition. To go further, you need an experienced teacher. So personally I think that if you are sincere and approach what you are taught with caution, this learning method should be quite allright.

But to clearify my own postition, I should add that XY is my second style and not my main focus. And about half of what I know is self taught. So you better listen to someone with more experience, someone who take XY more seriously than me. ;D

in general i do think you need a good teacher ...

but

what about all the old stories you hear about a guy finding a secret training manual and learning from it (a book) and becoming "masters"

or a chance meeting in the mountains with some master and learning from them for a very short time and becoming "masters" are these just stories or could there be any truth to them.
