XY Apps. From a XY book

Postby Felipe Bidó on Tue Jun 10, 2008 11:58 am

These are applications from the book "The Study of Practice, Applications and Methods of Xingyiquan" by Li Yushuan (In Chinese, you can buy it from Jarek). i have posted a few apps before and now I'll post more, everytime I have the chance. Some apps are very simple and obvious, others are not that much. They are certainly away from the typical apps you see in books, which come from the evident shape of the element or animal.

If time permits, I'll also post apps from the book "The Complete Skill of Xingyiquan" a Che Style book. Many great apps there.

Now, 5 apps for this afternoon:

1. Block and Cut: Hit the upcoming arm to the inside, pull and hit the opponent with a splitting fist to the neck.

Image

2. Transform and Split: Lead the upcoming attack and split the face with the fist.

Image

3. Split Downwards and Drill Upwards. Split at the attack, leading it down, and use Zuan to hit the face.

Image

4. Wipe the Eyebrows with Eagle. Step sideways, pull the arm and hit the eyes

Image

5. Dragon and Tiger Meet. Pull the arm and kick the groin

More to come. Please comment about variations, uses, etc.

1-3 are good, and basically the same I learned. I understand it is just lines in a book being demonstrated, but getting any of those (especially 1) on the lead arm jab with someone is damn near impossible! I too teach my guys and girls the basic idea off of the lead arm jab, just so they don't get too flustered with having so many hands coming at their face when learning a new technique. But as soon as possible I work the same technique off of a cross, or a jab - cross combo.
Just my experience.
Thanks for sharing Felipe! I look forward to seeing more!

Jake:

In number one, just think of you parrying the coming arm and whacking the guy in the neck in the same motion. Same movement, different footwork. That's the way I see it to make it more suitable to my needs.

I'll have more soon.

I love that "wipe the eyebrows stuff" I've got one of Luo's vids and one of marcus brinkmans where they go into that houtian "ban" and do lots of knocking people on the ground with it.

S- is a hippy but still likes him some apps

Also, look at the guy doing the kick - he has the longest left arm of any XingYi practitioner in history.

I accidentally kicked a co worker in the testicles with something similar to #5 there yesterday, as we were half grappling/half striking.

He didn't look near that happy when I did it though... I really need to gain some skill apparently.

Possibly adding the famed 'cuddly punches' to truly show my POWAAA.

When you prick me, do I not bleed?
When you kick me in the nuts, do I not fall on the ground and roll around in pain?

I remember in grade eight, a guy got a soccer ball right in the sack and walked away like it was nothing. My friend says "damm, that guy either has balls of steel, or no balls at all!".
Still makes me laugh to this day. :D

No.1 looks like a sparrow application we practiced recently. The parry is done as a deflect/redirect of the punching arm. With good drilling, the opponent's arm will fly out of the way, opening him up. Use the momentum to bring back the arm and hit in a downward, semi-circular way. One of my fave applications.

Edit: Mix, you gave me new ideas on things to try next time we spar. ;D

Don't kick me in the knackers please.
A friend of mine got kicked in the nads in a tkd competition and was up in bed for two weeks with a giant swollen sack. I think I need to buy a cup or something. :-X
