8 jin in yang style (24)

Postby mixjourneyman on Wed Oct 14, 2009 12:58 pm

Hey guys, long time no see. Just want to ask a question about the Beijing 24 and Yang style in general.
When considering Yang style we have to take into account the eight jin and five steps. I have isolated 7 of the 8 jin in the Beijing 24 routine, but I can't find elbow. I know that generally elbow and shoulder are hidden inside of movements that express different jins and I know a lot of ways of applying elbow jin from when I practiced Chen style, but I haven't found it yet in the 24. Any tips?

Hey Chris, good to see you too.
I'll probably hang out a bit and post once in a while.
You on facebook (that being where I do most of my socializing online these days).

Yes, I recently created an account to view some baby photos of a fellow RSFer's newborn. I've sent you a friend request. See you there.

Elbow is sneaky. There are opportunities for elbow coming out of bai he liang chi (crane spreads its wings), going into dan bian (single whip), yun shou (cloud hands), etc.

I had thought of elbow being in yun shou and dan bian, but was having trouble visualizing the application since they are so oblique (the way I usually apply an elbow technique is the opposite angle, to lock a joint). I'll play with the concept tonight though and see what comes of it :D

The 'elbow' is a part of the transitional movements (21b & 21c) leading into Form #21, Deflect, Parry and Punch, in the Beijing Simplified 24 Forms Taijiquan, and similarly appears in the Yang Style Taijiquan Forms:

A couple of examples

Transition from white-stork to brush-knee is outside-to-inside elbow.

Transition from brush-knee to pi-pa is inside-to-outside elbow.

As Swede said, cloud-hands is rife with elbow - both inside-to outside and outside-to-inside simultaneously. It's one big transition.

The image of elbow's trigram, tui, is lake. Its attribute is joyous - not placid but breaking and rolling maybe, like on a windy day. The substantiality of Chou is hidden in a soft, gentle appearance. Steps like waves, hands like clouds.

I think in general, in Yangjia elbow is not emphasized overtly in the form postures, it's mostly practiced in Da Lu. In Chenjia, there are many postures specifically and overtly for elbow usage.

in my completely un-educated, un-taichi-fied opinion, visualize making all those circles smaller and striking with the elbow before the hand/forearm, and elbow jin is in EVERY movement.

In fact, all 8 are probably in every movement somewhere!
