Root - does it exist?

I was originally taught that root was the result of learning how to sink, and our class practice analyzed movement and standing practice with a strong emphasis on this keyword. Even the principle of song (relaxation, yin, avoid li, or whatever) was subordinate, being just a part of what you had to do to sink properly. Sinking concerns both your structure and dealing with outside forces, vectors etc. I like ordering these concepts this way, because sinking as a concept deals with concrete methods to achieve a result, its about the dynamics of what's happening. And when you sink, then you're rooted. Focusing on root as the key concept is not inaccurate, but the emphasis is on the result, and to me there is less clarity about achieving this result. Of course, my brain might just be wired weird...
