Shanghai?

Postby mixjourneyman on Sat Sep 13, 2008 5:52 am

I'm thinking of going on a language exchange for school to the Shanghai area in May/June 2009.
Any advice on awesome MA'ists? I know that there is good Wu style there, but I'm not big on Wu style (studied it in Toronto for a couple years and just couldn't dig the feeling of it). I would love to learn some Tongbei or Pigua. :D

Shanghai has xinyiliuhequan, tongbeiquan, lanshouquan, Wang Zhuangfei and Jiang Rongqiao baguazhang, Wu style and Wuji Jinggong taijiquan. :) A lot of the higher level teachers that are willing to teach have already been profiled by George Xu's periodical CMA retreats (Qian Zhaohong, Wu Menggui, etc.).

Visit Shen Tiegen. He does a different Wu, but even if that's not your thing you can ask him about his Xinyi that stuff is no nonsense!

There is tons of that in Shanghai, I think Jarek could probably tell you where the best stuff is.

Cool.
I wouldn't mind checking out some xinyi and Mr.Shen seems like an awesome MA'ist.

I have a friend who is disciple of Gao Tie Niao (高鐵鳥...yes, "tall iron bird"), the late great Pei Xi Rong's disciple.
he knows xingyi (and xinyi), you long bagua, taiji.

his pi quan is flat out the best I've ever seen in my life. If you're in shanghai, I'd recommend no one higher than him. If you want to get in touch with him, I'll get you in touch with my friend.

Or maybe it was the magic mouth on Mr. Gao's pi-ing palm that succinctly and loudly pronounced "peeeee chwen" every time he did the technique.

(But seriously...)

it made a loud snapping sound every time, and his power was very strong and crisp. The snapping sound was tremendous. his sleeves were rolled up so it was not his sleeves making the sound. Not sure what it was exactly. he corrected my pi quan to be more straight than it used to be, so I do it that way now.
