Taijiquan in Shanghai (for a Chinese friend)

Postby edededed on Mon Jul 30, 2012 12:35 am

I've a friend in Shanghai who is interested in learning taijiquan, but would like to do so from a very good teacher (not the run-of-the-mill that is so common here and there).

He is a native Chinese, so of course has no problems with Chinese language (or Shanghainese).

Shanghai at one point had the famous Ma Yueliang, perhaps some of his better disciples are teaching in Shanghai? Or maybe good teachers of Hao/Wu style?

There are tonnes of Wu style teachers in Shanghai. As I don't practice Wu style, I am not sure who is the 'big kahuna' in terms of skills, but surely contenders would be:

- Ma's son Ma Hailong, who still teaches at the Wu Jianquan Association on Fuxing Rd
- Liu Jifa (disciple of Pei Zuyin & Ma Yueliang) - noted for dantian skills, although he is getting on in years, not sure if he is still teaching publicly
- Zhou Zhanfang (http://www.chiflow.com/html/biosZhouZhanFang.htm )
- Fei Guoqing: another notable disciple of Ma Yueliang, some vid footage here: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2IA94q3k5c)

As for Wu/Hao style, I would have thought the main go to person for this now that Liu Jishun is in the States is Wang Muyin (can be contacted through Rose Oliver's excellent Double Dragon Alliance http://www.doubledragonalliance.com/)。Hope that helps.

+1
I have met Mr Wang MuYin several times in ShangHai, I had the opportunity to exchange hands with him and to get thrown on my ass when trying to use some of my baji tricks on him ;D . He is a incredibly nice and humble person and has undisputed skills. Really a person to meet ...

Master Liu's son in law, Fan Guirong (nicknamed "Shao" Fan - he's not a small bloke)!lives and practises in Shanghai and has been named as the inheritor of the style by Master Liu. Had the opportunity to train with him for a week in 2008. If you could put some feelers out and an secure an introduction, I'd say there would be very few better sources anywhere in China........(sits back, munches popcorn, waits for the inevitable furore) ;D
