Need a school recommendation near Central Park, NYC

My little cousin lives in the area. She's a 15 year old sweet kid who's looking for a place to learn some good self defense and have fun. I don't want her falling into some McDojo trap or sports Karate bullshit. So if you guys have a good recommendation for a serious traditionalist teacher in the area who's also working with teenagers, I would appreciate it.

You could try contacting Sifu Shiu. He is skilled and definitely not a Mc Dojo. He is Strider Clark's martial brother. I'm not sure if he's in NYC any more but it's worth a try.

Thanks! :-)

If he's Strider's gongfu brother he's probably very good.

Any additional suggestions?

What exactly is she looking for? Self defense is not the same as martial arts.

If she's looking for self defense, I can PM you the info for an excellent women's self defense instructor in NYC.

If she's looking for a martial art, then what type of art? Internal? External? Sparring? No Sparring? Health practices? Community?

FWIW, "near Central Park" covers a lot of ground. East side, west side? How far uptown or downtown is she willing to travel? Based on the last line of your post, I'd recommend Oishi Judo in TriBeCa area.

If she is willing to ride the metro, I highly recommend Zhang Weidong. He teaches off of the Flushing stop (line 7). He was my teacher in Beijing for my first year until he moved to NYC. Solid, traditional training, and he understands the actual applications. However, he isn't so committed to tradition that he won't adopt things that work. Recommended for Xing yi, Bagua Zhang, and Shuai Jiao.

He doesn't speak a lot of English, but he has a student who translates for him.

It is a little bit of a trek for a week night if she is coming from Manhattan, but good for weekends.
