Hi there,

Can anyone recommend a good Taiji school in Sydney, preferably close to one of these suburbs: Beaconsfield, CBD area, Ultimo, Raleway, Redfern or Chippendale?

My cousin wants to complement his Judo training with another style that combines both Qiqong and self defense. We reckon Taiji would be really good for that.

Any suggestions?

I don't know whether he's doing tai-chi these days but I highly recommend training with Conn Cummins if you can

You might look up Ian Hogan. He does some form of IMA (not sure which), old school western pugilism, and WWII combatives. A fine teacher and a true scrapper who's been there and done that.

Conn is very good, don't know if he's in your area, but definitely try to meet him if you can. I'm sure he'd love to have some judoka to work with as well.

Conn is a good guy. His bagua focus might play well with judo.

You're also welcome to come and meet us for xinyi (5 element, 10 animal & chinna). We meet at sydney park top of newtown on thursday evening at the bike track. Pm me if you are interested.

Thanks for the information guys. I will Google Ian Hogan and Conn Cummins. Thanks for the invitation dspyrido, but I am based in NZ. It's my cousin who lives in Sydney, I shall pass your invitation though I think he might be more inclined to seek Taiji rather than Xingyi.

He's going to be 40 soon, and I think Xingyi might be a bit more taxing than Taiji? I'm not sure how he'd fare doing zanzhuang for an hour or so for example. He has multiple injuries from Judo practice too, so Taiji might just be the right healing arts, although I'm aware of the amazing qiqong component in Xingyi too.

Anyone have heard of or can comment about Imperial Yang Taiji or Richard Huang in Sydney?

Not really sure I think it is most of the morning
I just had some friends in from both Thailand and Malaysia and they went up there so I think it is becoming quite a meeting place
By the way at one time Ian hogan was a student of mine and after I left sydney he trained with fong lee

I think most of the clips are showing Fairbairn's WWII combatives, which don't look like much from the outside but when demonstrated by someone like Ian take on a whole new life. The clips are meant to show the general outline of the movements, and not the actual method. I wasn't impressed with the clips when I first saw them, but after seeing Ian in person my perspective has changed.
