(Lesser Known) Chinese Unis with Martial Arts programs

Apart from the biggies (Shichahai, BUPE etc) I stumbled across a couple:
@ Leshan Normal (Sichuan)
http://school.cucas.edu.cn/Leshan-Norma ... 33672.html

@ Cangzhou Normal (Hebei)
http://caztc.admissions.cn/course/view/ ... 20trainees

@ Ludong Uni (Yantai, Shandong)
http://school.cucas.edu.cn/Ludong-Unive ... 29326.html

Don't know much about Leshan (except, near huge Buddha), but Cangzhou and Yantai are pretty famous for TCMAs. (Cangzhou for many northern styles, Yantai area mainly for Mantis & Gong Bagua AFAIK).

Cangzhou Normal has some lineage holders on the teaching staff, including a female Gao Bagua master, Wen Jing (Chinese link):

Further enquiry is left as an exercise for the reader ;)

I did a language course at Ludong Uni when I lived there. The uni doesn't offer full courses for foreigners (at that time at least), but they do have a well known Wushu department, which focuses on standard Wushu routines and Sanda. They did invite my Shifu's daughter to go and teach traditional Mantis at one point, but she turned it down.

Dang... Well at least they showed some interest, I guess maybe things have changed - they do seem to be offering an MA program for foreigners - it was quite a while back right?

Thanks for the info!

Turns out there's a list, with a few slightly unusual places like Kaifeng (Henan) & Tianshui (Gansu - had to google it :) Also Nanjing & Chongqing.

Hard to dig up info on the Tianshui one, only this:

Even if the programs themselves are not great, it is a good way to stay in these cities with very strong martial traditions. For example, Kaifeng has a very strong community of Xinyi Liuhe practitioners, and Tianshui / Gansu is famous for its staff / biangan (whipstaff) - known for having lots of paired staff work and staff fighting, if you like that kind of thing.

Thanks - I had no idea of the Kaifeng-Xinyi Liuhe or Gansu-Biangan links. (& indeed need to brush up on the distinction between Xinyi Liuhe & Xinyi...)

Several of these place have more-or-less inexpensive Chinese programs (from $~3k/year inc accommodation) which could also be a way in. (Kunming Uni of Science & Tech & Kunming Metallurgy College also have some of the cheapest, Kunming has quite a few Sha GuoZheng people & a training hall.)

I also just found an affordable-looking* Taiji program in Handan (where Yang & Wu Taiji originated & presumably are still the real deal):
http://hdc.admissions.cn/course/view/4996-Taichi
http://www.hdc.edu.cn/ywjj.asp

(*Cost/quality of accommodation can be out of line with tuition - no details on those that I can find. Hard to even find the email for their foreign affairs office! Just emailed a random one to ask...)

UPDATE: more info buried here:
http://www.admissions.cn/hdc/cn5.html

Accommodation is RMB28-40/day (10-15,000/year), other fees low (no reg fee, RMB300 insurance, RMB300-500 for books) Canteen RMB10-15/meal. Works out around RMB27,000-32,000/year inc room & board.

Seems like there's a Taiji batchelors :)

Honestly my experience with teachers from within the Wushu system has been pretty bad, even if they have a good traditional foundation my experience has been that most can't fight and just teach forms.

In the case of Handan, I would not hold out any particular hopes for the teachers at Handan uni being very good, BUT you are right that there are several very good masters of Yang / Wu (Yuxiang) taiji teaching there, like Zhang Caibin (Yang Banhou branch), Zhai Weichuan (Wu Yuxiang style). If you want more recommendations for teachers in Handan, just PM me.

Thanks again - I see you visited Handan and nearby Guangfu (where Yang & Wu styles originated):

Your blog (& that whole trip report in particular) is a goldmine of information for anyone considering studying TCMAs in China. I hope you get to do more trips! (& nominate the places in this thread!)

One of my teachers studied at Beijing Sports University in late 80s, early 90s. When he was studying there, he noted that students were expected to study with a traditional teacher outside of the university system. Some other programs might do that as well.

One note on Kunming. I can't say anything about the program, but the climate in the city is fantastic. Food in Yunnan is great and there are a lot of amazing sites in the province.

Based on various things*, there is evidence of traditional masters teaching at Chinese unis. I hope this tendency gathers strength.

Kunming is by far the most livable of the limited set Chinese cities I've been to (Beijing, Kunming, Shanghai, Changsha) & relatively affordable. (& now has a metro, so rush hour traffic may be less of a problem.)

I think chinese-forums.com has some threads on the Chinese programmes there including about half a dozen private language schools that offer similar-priced Chinese courses (though their quality and the 'officialness' of their ability to sponsor long-term visas may vary).

*Eg the Cangzhou Normal info & chenyaolong's post, & a Chinese doco series I skimmed on Youtube; I can try to dig up the name if there's interest.
