CMA in Pico Rivera, CA.

Postby GrandUltimate on Sat Oct 26, 2019 11:46 pm

I just recently moved to Pico Rivera, CA, and was hoping to find a teacher relatively close by (~30-45 mins driving) to train some form of CMA.

I'm open to any system so long as the teacher is legit, though my preferences include Bagua (preferably non-Cheng), Choy Lay Fut, Hop Gar, Tai Chi (though not chen style), Shuai Jiao, or Bajiquan. Just to clarify, by "legit" I don't really mean that I'm looking to fight or challenge any teacher, but more of a teacher that can clearly show application and energy of movement.

I'm also a disciple under a Sifu and still train the Kung Fu I learn from him, so I can't learn from anyone who is not cool with that. I'm not looking to learn an entire system, as I may only be in CA for only 2 years, but I would love to even get some solid basics in another art to add to my own knowledge.

Sorry if this is a snobby list of preferences. If anyone could guide me in the right direction here, that would be greatly appreciated.

Oh wow, I didn't even realize Tim Cartmell was such a relatively short ride away. Maybe I can settle for training BJJ at his school if his private sessions are out of my expense limits. Or perhaps I can find if he has some students in the area that teach. Thanks for the suggestion.

This actually looks very interesting as well. Unfortunately I'm not at the point where I can spent $150 per hour to train with someone. But this is something I'll definitely keep in mind to see if other options do arise. Thanks.

I feel somewhat silly as I forgot to mention a very important factor: price range
I know this will only make things harder, but I'm hoping to find a place that would run me around $100-150 per month.

I've noticed that there's a Yin Style Bagua group in LA. I emailed the person who seemed like the closest instructor. Does anyone have experience with these YSB groups or know of similar stuff I can look up?

Tung Taiji Los Angeles

If you’re willing to drive, Tung Kai Ying (Tung Ying Chieh’s eldest grandson) teaches Yang Style in West L.A.
Kai Ying’s son is the main teacher there now but Kai Ying still shows up from time to time.

Did you ever get your training figured out? I’m teaching various internal arts about 15 minutes away from Pico Rivera.

My office is in Diamond Bar which is a little closer to Riverside. Don't plan on doing bjj for awhile until virus transmission is under control so would be glad to have an occasional training partner. If interested, pm me.
