IMA people in San Francisco?

Postby nicklinjm on Wed Jun 30, 2010 3:53 pm

I will be in San Francisco for a week in July, and was hoping to visit a couple of IMA teachers while I'm there. Can anyone recommend any IMA teachers worth checking out in San Francisco? I'm not fussed about style, just looking for people who can help me understand the 'I' in IMA.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I would suggest going to Fairtex gym and training. Or visit any of Cesar Gracie's schools or students schools (Jake Shields, Melendez).

All of the above suggestions are good, and I've been to most of them myself. Plenty of solid training to be had in the Bay.

Fairtex is a fine gym, but I like the vibe better at Chris Cariaso's Fight and Fitness: http://www.fightandfitness.com/. In Oakland Mikey's gym is totally taking off: http://www.pacificringsports.com. In Berkeley ModCom seems to have a nice group: http://www.moderncombatives.com/

In terms of IMA many of the above teachers are worth visiting. Me & my friend Isaac have a Hsing-I class going in Berkeley from 6-9 on Monday nights, details here:http://watertradition.net/classes.html

Then there's so much in terms of Capoeira, Japanese martial arts, Southern Chinese martial arts, Southeast Asian martial arts, combat sports, grappling, etc, it's going to be really hard to list them all! I've had a great time visiting gyms all over the bay, but since having kids my visiting spree came to a dead stop more or less.

Nice suggestions Jess...

Re BJJ, one more to add. Sergio Silva at Open Door BJJ: http://opendoorbjj.com/

I actually met him at a yoga teacher training years after I stopped doing any JJ. The guy has great technique (BB under Marcelo Monteiro and extensive training under Ricardo de la Riva), and from what I hear from friends, is running a really clean, highly conscious, non-ego oriented BJJ school.

Peace,

What a lovely character you have ::) ::) ::)

The fact remains that the person did not ask for BJJ. No matter what you might think is good for him or anyone else for that matter: He asked for something else and it's none of your business to tell anyone, what they should strive for.

Do you have anything else to contribute than criticizing other teachers, who have their seminars posted on the events section, creating traffic for your blog or telling other people, that they need to practice BJJ?

And, to augment your IMA training, you might want to pay a visit to the best yoga teacher in the Western hemisphere, Manouso Manos.

He asked for good IMA people in San Fran. I gave him my opinion. Fine if you don't agree/like, but no one cares, because no one asked.
I contribute plenty. Come talk to me the day you have taught X amount of people, have had the success at hosting CMA teachers in town, have been published in just about every martial arts publication etc. etc. You don't like what I offer... fine... but keep your snide little BS comments to yourself then.

So you mistake BJJ for an IMA and actually thought you were contributing something. In that light I was wrong. Sorry.

But don't be surprised, when people call you on your BS. Besides your advertising, which is perfectly legimate, but very obvious, your whole presence on this forum is about snide. You keep hijacking threads all the time and I, and many others, are just fed up with it.

Also don't believe the hype.

Cesar's has some good fighters and so does Fairtex but I doubt they're going to pay much attention to a "tourist" other than seeing them as fresh meat.

I remember when I stopped by Cesar's (which is near me) to find out what their schedule was and when I walked through the door the guy asked me, "What do you want to know? You want to roll?"

If someone from out of town wanted to see some bay area BJJ (other than I gym I go to) I'd probably recommend 10t Planet Jiu-jitsu.

They have a bunch of stuff on youtube...

http://www.youtube.com/user/Submissions101

and even on yelp they have 5 stars.

Not wanting to hijack the thread but ... how do you think Fight and Fitness would be for someone new to MMA/MT/BJJ? I'm new to San Francisco and looking around for a new school - Fight and Fitness is pretty close to where I live and work so... I was doing Gao Bagua before so I might make it over to check out what you're doing at some point too (I hope so..., we'll see). Anyway, I'm trying to find something closer to me than Berkeley (for now, at least).

G-
I am sorry to hear about the negative experiences. I have always gone with teachers and friends.
Good call on 10th planet! I always forget Denny is in San Fran area!

CDOBE-
I did not mistake anything for anything. I can read, and I can read what I type. I suggested these schools because I thought he would get more out of them then the "IMA" cats I know of in the area.
Call me on whatever BS you wish bro. I have no BS so there is nothing to call me on.
If you are so fed up along with your little buddies then why are hijacking this cats thread and acting like a little teary eyed girl? Don't like me, don't instigate shit with me. Sounds to me like the pot is calling the kettle black here junior in regards to being snide.

BTW are you German in ethnicity?
