Free Taijiquan Foundation Program in the East Midlands, UK

Free Taijiquan Foundation Program from 22nd May to 31st July 2021, 10 to 11 am, upper hall of Trinity Methodist Church Centre, Royland Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 2EH. It will consist of 10 weeks of teaching and practice, and 2 weeks of revision and evaluation. From 11 am to 1 pm, the upper hall is available for those who want to stay and practice, and for private tuitions.

The aim of this program is to develop standards for the identified variables of non-concentric Taijiquan for future clinical trials. Therefore it is suitable for practitioners and non-practitioners of Taijiquan, who are interested to utilize and develop their innate strengths.

The presenter Yun Choi Yeung was very active in the martial arts communities in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, and Foshan before relocating to the UK in 2010 to further his research and to promote the martial sport of pushing hands and Pangration for the World Pangration Athlima Federation (https://www.worldpangration.net) with the aim to introduce it as a martial sport for the Olympic Game. Since then he contributes regularly to the Quarterly Journal of the Institute of Martial Arts and Sciences (http://www.instituteofmartialartsandsciences.com) and presentations in the last three annual congresses of European College of Sport Science (http://ecss-congress.eu).

The plan for this foundation program as follows:

Lesson 1: Oneness in mind and body, movement of joints, seated breathing exercise and small universe. passive stance, Standing breathing and large universe, introduction to biotensegrity.

Lesson 2: Passive and active continuum, weak and strong, flexibility and stiffness, light and heavy, rotation of crotch, and eccentric stepping.

Lesson 3: Directions and center of gravity in stepping

Lesson 4: Movements of wrist, elbow, shoulder, and combinations

Lesson 5: Movements of the torso in the anatomical planes

Lesson 6: Traditional kinetic chain of the nine sets of joints

Lesson 7: Limbs and torso co-ordinations

Lesson 8: Generation of eccentric strength

Lesson 9: Utilization of stored elastic energy

Lesson 10: Stretch and recoil cycles

Lesson 11: Revision and evaluation

Lesson 12: Revision and evaluation

Due to limited space for COVID social distancing requirements, enrolment is required. Please contact the sponsor for further information: [email protected]

A great step in a right direction! At least the exposure to the physical elements would assist the internal over time ::)
Just being the resident gadfly for a moment.
1. What about the physical exercise parameters of what is called a warm up period before actual activity i.e. taijiquan form element. Many clinical trials mention this warm up period as a precursor to specific routine.
2. Per clinical trials of taijiquan, close to 75% are Yang style under evaluation. Check out PubMed citations! I realize in theory that all taijiquan share the below information you noted above.
3. For clinical trials on taijiquanto be 'validated', they usually choose someone with some level of experience but a few have mentiond the use of 'sham' taiji teachers to test the validity of specific style/variant.
4. Do you believe you will see a congruence of clinical significance with statistical significance, or they will both diverge (go in different directions) it is possible for clinical signficance without statistical significance though the explanation of benefit will really be incongruent meaning the benefit MAY be explained, not based on actual outcome but on teacher's manner of presentation, the environment or even the motivation of those attending the sessions.
Personally, I believe the unity/variables of teacher, environemnt and motivation do count but they are almost impossible to objectify. The SF-36 tends to be used attempting to quantify quality of life as in a pre and post analyses over the duration of a trial!
5. Do you think that there will be a quantifiable outcome of the same style being taught by different teachers. Of course they will be using the same methodology per inclusion/exclusion instructions. WIll the results show somethig significant?
I mention this based on what I have heard/read on Yang Chengfu journey! Despiet the claim by purists that he was the least taught ??? and that he died at 53 years, many of his students lived into their 80s, 90s meaning other variables inherent to taijiquan are overlooked and are seen in a narrow framework.

You should NOT give anything away for free. People will not respect it.

If you noticed, people who put a high price on Taijiquan...people flock to pay for it when the teacher is total garbage.
People who give stuff for free usually are really good and love it and want to share, but are dirt poor.

Many thanks for your comment, I have sent an abstract included the qualitative research method for acceptance to the 2021 Congress of the European College of Sport Science for E-poster presentation. In any case I will follow up with methodology in doing research in RSF for falsification. The problem of inconsistent results in Taijiquan research is the failure to isolate the input variable, sort of rubbish in and rubbish out that is all.

It is a question of opportunity cost between doing it for money and doing it for science. This program is just a follow up of the free presentation on the sciences of Taijiquan for the De Montfort University Confucius Institute in February and as a preparation program for the revised pushing hand competition which is under development in China.
